STUNT Challenge (finished): Heavy Crosswinds!

Postby Oscar » Sat Jul 02, 2011 12:43 am

Hey guys,

After being away for a while, I actually had to rush to get this video out there, but here it is:

Congrats to Omega for winning the previous challenge!

This challenge: grab a plane, pick an airport, open up your weather info box, select some horrible weather and try to land.

Not feeling challenged? Well then show me how extreme the winds on your crosswind landings are!

Someone wanna tell me how to change the weather on Git. Even if I disable METAR and change the settings manually, they don't make any changes.

alright, here's my submission...

AVA B777-200ER at TNCM, with winds heading 180 at 35kts. -about the most realistic you can get with fair skies around here.

Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

787-8 vs. 91.9 kts crosswind. Note that in such high wind conditions, taxiing is impossible (unless you could sweep the wings back or something), so I had to fly over to parking after I landed.

LOL. Just know that the wind speed isn't everything. The main thing that makes this difficult is a combination of the wind speed, the efficiency of the wings, and the weight of the aircraft. Considering that my crosswind during final was a headwind at speeds equal to my rotation speed at my low weight during takeoff, I don't think I could manage a greater wind speed without either increasing the payload to get the plane beyond max landing weight or switching planes.

I understand that, and I just felt that I could try challenging myself more with in harsher conditions -TNCM is an airport I'm used to flying into in FG (despite the horrible touchdown), so I wanted to try somewhere more ...foreign.

I spent ages on Saturday trying to land a bigger jet like the MD-81 or the A320 in winds of 45 knots or so, but once I got them on the runway they would get blown away again. So I tried again today with the Citation X, and at least it stayed on the ground. The wind is 45 knots but it seemed to change direction as I got lower down, I forget what direction settings I had.

The airport is SBRJ at RIo de Janeiro with Statto's custom scenery plus I added a bunch of buildings with the UFO...

 not sure if the landing gear should have survived that!
But great video! Shows what some (generic/fake) buildings can do!
