NEW Challenge: the River Visual Approach
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA), Runway 19 (or optional: 22)

This challenge was submitted by kyokoyama; last month's winner.

Good luck doing this hard visual approach! Be sure to win ;-) Here's some more info about the approach:

Submit your screenshots and videos before September 16th!

By submitting screenshots or videos, you give me permission to use a part of it in a future Stunt Fridays episode.

Unfortunately, this video did not turn out the way kyokoyama and I wanted, but at least the idea is clear.

----------

Good luck :)

Good luck to all! Even a slight crosswind at the airport makes the final turn hard... Think of this as the Kai Tak of the West, complete with "walls of death" (the restricted flying zones above the Pentagon and National Mall that sandwiches your final approach path).

IMPORTANT: In reality, this approach is a visual approach that can only be conducted if there is at least 3mi. visibility. Don't even think about cheating that... It's hard without that.

EDIT: To supplement the introduction video Oscar's kindly made, I feel like an actual demonstration flight may be needed here... Here it is!

This flight uses Statto's custom scenery for the Washington-Baltimore area, downloadable in his post below. Thank you again for the release.
Oscar and I were originally planning to release our own Custom Scenery from the Map Servers, which would actually make the area look like Washington DC (maybe even better than Statto's...? -just kidding) and not have buildings floating on the Potomac River, as shown in the video. However, technical and deadline issues prevented us from doing so. (If you want to help me solve the underlying problem, please go to this thread.)

Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

...and now I know I could've downloaded a file instead of having to learn how to compile landclasses...

-Thank you, Statto! I'll try that out.

didiogoify contacted me about his submission: he doesn't know how to submit video responses on YouTube and then I realized I did neither lol..
Since he doesn't have a FG Forum account, I post his video here:

Hints for contestants:

Download the new Terrain. If you use TerraGear for your objects, the bridge with the "lighthouse" on it will be in the middle of the river. (If you just use TerraGear it will be harder as the bridge isn't actually over the river.) Try to aim the plane directly over the top of that lighthouse, bank to the right and you should be a-ok.

Thanks for the submissions so far, guys. But Kyokoyama and I think many more people could submit their River Visual approaches! Therefore, we are extending this contest by one week!

More submissions will be excepted untill September 22nd.

Good luck

Besides, because it's the start of a new work and school year for many of us (especially in Europe and America), I figured that it would only be fair if there is more time for the submissions.

-So good luck!

I don't understand why the approach at runway 19 is a challenge. It's not really a difficult approach, I think the challenge must be to do the river visual on runway 22. I've got 19 perfect and smooth every time I tried (I have so much confidence in that I even trusted a merlion flight with that landing) but on 22, I've only got 2 out of 3 right and I didn't record any cuz of HUGE lag and cuz my landings were pretty hard on 22. Once, 1 of my wheels hit first and I almost turned off the runway but I used the rudder to fix it quick... 19 is a landing... 22 is a challenge...

The challenge is to do the 19-river visual approach, with 22 as an optional choice. Which means that if you do land successful at 22, you will of course have a more likely chance to win, as the 22 approach is indeed much harder.

I agree that 19 is significantly easier, too...
...but throw some crosswind in there. I promise you it'll be at least a bit different then.
