channel node in system definition... what's it for?

As far as I can tell the <channel> tag is used to group related functions. Does it serve any other purpose?

Well, you can enable / disable a whole channel at once by adding an execute attribute to it, whose value is the property that you want to use to switch the channel on / off. (off / disabled means that all components of the channel won't be run), and you can make a channel (and thus all of it's components) run at a slower rate than the default 120 Hz with the execrate attribute, whose value is (120 / desired execution rate in Hz).
