Hello everyone!

I created an AppImage of Flightgear version 2020.1.1 for Linux, it can be downloaded here:

Hello,
I found your initiative really good. I appreciate your effort very much. I downloaded and tried the AppImage for FlightGear 2020.1 you built. For that I used a really low specs laptop with AMD E-350 proc + 3.5 GB Ram with Debian 10 Kernel Linux 4.19.0-9-rt-amd64 x86_64. Nice to see it works really well. I'm surprised about how fast the FG AppImage starts and the whole software works so good. AppImage is a format for distributing portable software on Linux without needing superuser permissions to install the application. (...) allow Linux distribution-agnostic binary software deployment (*Wikipedia). So it means It can work into many different GNU/Linux distributions without thinking about the package management system is being used .deb .rpm etc. It could be a great achievement in the way to distribute a future packaged FG releases for Linux users. I would like to ask you also to explain the steps to achieve these results. I mean, wich software do you used to build this AppImage? Wich steps do you made? It would be great to know the entire building process.

Thank you really much

~Patrizio

I used the pkg2appimage tool on ubuntu, it has a recipe for building an appimage of flightgear using the ppa

All you have to do is on a Ubuntu machine clone the repo:
https://github.com/AppImage/pkg2appimage

and then run " bash -ex ./pkg2appimage recipes/FlightGear.yml “

I asked on the dev mailing list about adding the appimage to the downloads page, but they want some way of reproducing the build every time but unfortunally their jenkins servers run on Centos and not Ubuntu so the way I did it cannot be reproduced automatically for now.

Regards!

@paju1986

Your FG AppImage It worked very well on my computers. This morning I tried it into Ubuntu Studio 20.04 also and it works like a charme. I don't have a .rpm based PC, so I don't know how it works on that distroes. As far as I see the building process is pretty easy and fast reproducible on a Debian based system. I don't know why the DEVS choosed CentOS (A Red Hat Enterprise derivative distro released for free), that's .rpm based, instead of Ubuntu or Debian. Maybe they feel more comfortable with that cause is a really stable distro. For sure from now I will have a way to build my FG AppImage that will works everywhere. About my opinion your effort to spread an AppImage is a great contribution and it values alot. Thank you really much for that.

Kind regards

~P.

a corresponding script would be best added to the fgmeta repository

there should already be something in FGMeta since jenkins is building the appimage when the other flavors are built...

"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
