Prop-fans and the Coanda thruster

Postby Samgordon » Wed Mar 28, 2018 11:49 pm

Hi,

I think we should simulate two unique propulsion systems.

One is known as prop-fan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propfan) and it allows propeller airplanes to run at jet speed. One drawback to prop-fans is it's noise. I think we can reduce that by applying the "owl winglet," part of Ziehl-Abegg's "fe2owlet" industrial axial fan design. https://www.ziehl-abegg.com/us/en/produ ... /fe2owlet/

The second is called the Coanda thruster. It could be a very low-noise and fast engine. http://www.linux-host.org/energy/acoanda.html

Thanks.

the Coanda thruster looks to be a water base thruster... it might be used in some water craft but there's not a lot of those in a flight simulator ;)
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Prop-fans are somewhat researched and established, but I also can't see how the Coanda thruster can't work in a fluid like air. The vacuum cleaner and room fan also work in air.

it just looked like a boat thruster, to me...

anyway, if someone wanted to start modeling these, they can go right ahead... i'd recommend doing it in JSBSim since you can model anything in there... all you need is the right numbers and functions to feed into it... it is something that is, on the surface, looking to be a lot deeper than what we (TINW) normally deal with in flightgear, though... but don't let that stop you if that's what you want to dig into :)

Counter-rotating prop-fans increases performance slightly.

NASA has published a (very) large body of work on prop-fans.

I myself have in the past download a large number of publications. I can make them available from my google drive.

No, the Coanda effect works in any fluid - which includes air.
seehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coand%C4%83_effect

As well as thrust, it can also be used to generate lift.
