Actually using the airports?

Postby benrob0329 » Tue Apr 12, 2016 8:59 pm

This is probably a ridiculous idea, but what if you could go inside the airports?

It could be used to gather flight information or schedule repairs (for added realism and fun) or perhaps to get on a flight as a passenger?

I know that its not really important to a flight sim, but neither is being able to walk around (its still cool though)

You figured it out already, the walker is the hardest part of the equation - apart from that, FlightGear does not care what kind of 3d model is surrounding you, so as long as you have a corresponding 3D model, you can also make FlightGear use it - including a change in position/viewpoint and perspective.

Obviously, you'd need a 3D model of a building that includes interior details like rooms/stairs and walls etc - but at some point, someone actually did post screenshots where they used flightgear as a first person shooter.

FlightGear is fairly losely coupled, so it isn't attached to the whole notion of actually simulating an "aircraft":

I have developed a giant marshmallow man model add-on for FlightGear. It will allow you to deploy a marshmallow man approximately 20,000ft tall, and 10nm wide, from the B-1B weapon bay. It is designed to be installed within a certain derivative version of the FlightGear B-1B package.
