3D OSG clouds - first step

Postby HeliFlyer » Sat Oct 25, 2008 5:14 pm

Hi,

Stuart - with the help of Tim and HHS - has provided a patch for FG OSG CVS for 3 D clouds.
Not all is perfect, it is just a first BIG step and improvement for the OSG branch.

For all those curious about the results here are some screenshots from my first flight in 3D-cloud-space.
No art, just documentation.

And yes, I know that I exceeded the top-speed because I was so impressed by the new eye-candy :-)

Anyway, here is the link

Ugly! But hey you gotta start somewhere. This is definite progress and I have been waiting a long time for this. Good job to those who made the 3D clouds, thank you.

Awsome news and congrats on the progress. I think they look pretty good as they add a lot more realism even if they aren't perfect yet. :D

The only thing that has kept me from converting to OSG/CVS is the lack of 3D clouds. For me, the sim just just doesn't quite make it for me (seems like a little step backwards from 1.0.0) unless it has the 3D clouds.

Thanks for all your hard work on my behalf!!

Great News (with a capital)! Only the edges need some little more attention.
I saw on the mailinglist that our clouds are even more advanced than X-planes! ;)

To be honest, this is a little misunderstanding from your side. The author of this referenced post had the opinion that, if we could make all the different cloudtypes of RL working in FG then it would be more realistic than the two different cloudtypes that X-Planes has.

I think this is possible to realize and after a long time watching the development of FG I am pretty sure that in 1 year we'll have better looking 3D-clouds as the PLIB version has now.

BTW: here you see the typical cloud configuration of a nice day at the northsea (F14 landing Jever military airbase):

The ugliness ( I think you mean the edges in some parts...) are because the alpha blending isn't working properly yet.
If this is solved it will look much better.

Another point is: in the moment Stuart only has defined some rough Cu's - but everyone can easily define his own cloud types, with its own textures!
This means: we could use X-Planes textures, or MSFS textures, or selfmade one, self-photgraphed ones....
We can define a lot more if we want- nimbostratus etc...!

Some textures are by me, but I'm not really happy yet....

Right! Like heliflyer said- it needs a little bit efforts by all from us, to have nice looking clouds. Stuart made it very editable so everyone can define the cloudtypes, looking etc. like he wants. O.k., X-Plane has this ability too, but like I had understand our METAR- code, it also can choose the different cloud types depending on the weather.

I just update my FGFS-CVS and hope to try the clouds soon.

Cheers

First: all people: update your drivers first before trying out the new stuff!

O.k. some pics which shows the advantages and the glitches of the new 3d-clouds. In some pics you can see that the alpha blending is working on some parts of the clouds, and the we can easily improve the clouds with some much better textures!

Hi HHS,
I am no guru like u guys, but i think from your picx, that the clouds look better with no outer black boundry, which makes it seperated frm others, while the clouds having same colour, blend very nicely.
Also clouds being cut out like a cake seems very bad!

Hope these tips help!!

Hi,

just to complete this discussion, there seems to be a rather big difference
how the clouds are displayed from one graphic-card/driver to another.

Compare these (new) screenshots (NOT SELECTED) with HHS's ones. I
think a remarkable difference.

But - as already mentioned - this is the FIRST step, more to come, I am sure.

It is in CVS already!
ftp://ftp.ihg.uni-duisburg.de/FlightGear/Win32/fgrun+fgfs-osg-win32-20081026.zip
update your GPU driver first!
Then enable 3d-clouds and select Fair Weather or METAR

Then I would like to see some screenshots for comparing.... :D

Yeah- interesting- a big difference. :?

Edit: O.k.- I just noticed, that the cloud textures wasn't properly downloaded from CVS- I had still the one from the first patch, but in the meanwhile Stuart chenged them a little bit. But it doesn't explain the difference completly!
