Walking through the Scenery: The portable Walker

Postby DFaber » Sat Nov 16, 2013 3:34 pm

Hello everybody,

I was actually wondering - is the walker something that could be added to an aircraft easily? Like having the option to step out of a helicopter somewhere and walk around, or explore the aircraft carrier on foot, or... would be a really cool addition.

This is now possible. The current Walker can be added to any Aircraft by changing a single line in the Aircrafts -set file. Here are some Screenshots:

Details and Downloads here:

A Walker enabled Ju-52 is here:

Note, you need the Aircraft and the Human Download.

I suggest to add this to the 11/2013 newsletter, including the screen shots and maybe even a short youtube video showing how it works.

Cool! I'm looking forward to try this! Should this go to GIT then?

Yes, this will certainly go into GIT. I guess it's just a matter of days.

Nice! Cannot test it right now (will do as soon as I can), but if it's true that this is no stand-alone "aircraft", Aircraft/Generic would probably be a better location...

Indeed I'm thinking about making a Stand Alone Walker "Aircraft". The Nasal Part and Models can get into Aircraft/Generic as well. I'll change that.

Terrific.

What a nice helicopter! Why don't I fly somewhere?

Image

*flies off to top of Rundamanen just above Bergen - I've been there for real just a couple of weeks ago*

Image

Nice up here!

Image

And there's a whole world to explore!

Image

Ground texture quality is actually okay for the walker - not terrific and clearly not competitive with a commercial adventure game or so, but one could use that to design a game in which one has to fly around, get out and walk to certain locations, talk to people to get clues to the next location - something like a spy story! Or a Lara Croft adventure...

Really like it!

Just one suggestion - would it be better to move the walker - out of walker transition from 'o' to a menu entry? Some aircraft have 'o' mapped (the carrier-bourne craft use this for the hook for instance) and in fact this confused me for 10 minutes when I rigged the EC-135 for the walker, because it also has the key mapped. And getting the walker out isn't something one needs to do in a hurry, so it can well be a menu entry imo.

I didn't test steep slopes and water - how's the behaviour there?

Some of these Elemants are already implemented in the Halloween Adventure. There is a hidden Key to find and a Trap to escape. Implementing this in Nasal is actually quite easy.

Good Idea, the Walker Menu is far from final yet. I'll add a Menu Item for that, but note you can leave the Aircraft in Air and use the Parachute (j for ripchord). Once the integration with the inside Walker is done I hope to have a direct transfer through the Doors to get out. Than there is no need for a key anymore.

He climbs like a Mountain Goat :-). Right now the Walker can climb steep slopes and walk on the Water. But this will be changed in future Versions. Swimming and hoisting as well as entering AI/MP Vehicles is on my Todo List.

given that you are planning on turning him into a proper "aircraft": what would be needed to turn that little guy into an animated parachutist for our new osgEarth scenery?
I remember Curt once posting about this (quite a while ago): http://www.flightgear.org/tours/sky-div ... alization/

not too much, Stewart already implemented basic skydiving, but it is by far not as advanced as what you found. it would be pretty cool to actually have controllable skydiving available, hmmm...

... thinking about it, it would be a good thing to be able to "pause" the FDM Computations and control the Position by a script. That way a Vehicle or Aircraft could be carried by another (I think of loading a Jeep into an Aircraft, or carry an X15 by a B52. that way the above mentioned Skydiver could re-enter an Aircraft and hop out again.

I did not think of this before, but maybe some of the walker efforts can be combined with some of the ramp marshall efforts over in Nasal based Independant Ramp Marshall. ;) (Though omega95 probably is rather busy IRL at the moment.)

Another Update: The Walkers new Hand Poses are now integrated in the Walker Animation Dialog. Outfit Selection is via Themes and Developers can now put Pilot and Co-Pilot Models into their Cockpit:
Image

Walker and Pilots are now available in GIT.

Details and (non GIT User) Downloads here:

http://cms.flightgear-de.net/index.php/engoben/91-comdiffen/112-humanen

For an example implementation get the ju52 here:
http://cms.flightgear-de.net/index.php/engoben/87-aircen/87-ju52en
or from yesterdays GIT.

@ Johan G: Since the Marshallers Model is a predecessor of the current Walker it should only be a matter of exchanging Models and pivot points.

A Walker for every Aircraft!
Now the Walker can be added to every Aircraft via commandline Option. Simly add the line:
Code: Select all
--config=<Path_to_FG_ROOT>/Aircraft/Generic/Human/Include/walker-include.xml

to your commandline and the Walker will be available in every Aircraft with it's Menu.

Download, Details and Documentation here:
http://cms.flightgear-de.net/index.php/engoben/91-comdiffen/112-humanen

Maybe a FlightGear Launcher Developer likes to add a Checkbox for it.
