Request an airport update (see first post)

Postby Gijs » Mon Jan 11, 2010 9:25 pm

Hi,

with the upcoming release of FlightGear 2.0.0, I worked on quite some airport layouts that were desperately in need of some updates. Gral and I would like to update more airports. Please post some info if you know airports that could use an update (in FG).

Hopefully this will result in more detailed airports, where new/old users can due their best at adding models.

Cheers,
Gijs and Gral

REQUESTED AIRPORTS
Everyone, feel free to work on any of the following airports:
- EGGD
- KHIO
- KOLM
- KRYN
- KUAO
- KUNV
- PHNG
- PHHI
- RJAW
- VNLK

UPDATED AIRPORTS
These airport layouts are already updated. This does not mean that they have proper groundnetworks (and thus startpositions) nor objects (like terminals)!
- EDWJ
- EGBJ
- EGKA
- EHAL
- EHAM
- EHLE
- EHTX
- EHVK
- KDMA
- KORD
- LOKL
- TFFJ
- TNCM

I am not sure how acurate this airport is already, maybe KEUG (Eugene, Oregon, USA) could be updated?

If so I would be willing to make a model for it.

Thanks,
Hovkid

You can check the current state of each airport by filling it's ICAO code in the most top box and pressing ICAO: http://mapserver.flightgear.org/
Be sure to use Firefox (or some other browser), as it does not work with Internet Explorer!

KEUG doesn't look that bad (on a first look), but I'll have a closer look tomorrow.

Oh, wow. I greatly appreciate your offer. There are so many airports you could do, so let me give you some hints ;)

In the Pacific Northwest, KOLM and KHIO are two large airports which could do with an update, but any airport in that region would be welcome. There are still two generic army airfields on Oahu which would be nice to update (and one abandoned airfield which for some reason is still in the system - it's now a nature preserve, so don't do that one). KDMA would be a nice-to-have on my list as well, considering it's a huge military aircraft graveyard. However, that's a rather selfish list.

To be honest, I'd shoot for an update of generic French or Dutch airports - especially France, because the CORINE data is much more detailed than the scenery I've been producing.

Don't do KEUG, it's good enough for now. Apologies to hovkid, but there are far too many generic airports out there right now.

John,

Make a list, selfish or not. Post it up to show folks what can be done, and those of us that have a minute to grab one or two to complete.

Alright, here's a "selfish" list in no particular order (based on the scenery areas I've been able to update):

Hawaii:
PHWI
PHNG

Pacific Northwest:
KOLM
KHIO
KUAO

Arizona:
KRYN
KDMA

Will try to think of others as well. I think KORD needs a runway updated.

I will defenitely not make the AI groundnetwork for KDMA! :)
It does not need one btw, as all those aircraft are static anyway...

- What is the name/location of PHWI? I was unable to track it down...
- Adding runway 27R (correct?) to KORD (without any detailed taxiways) will be a minute work, I will do that right away.

All Statto's airports are on my todo list now, though I probably won't finish them all in time. Other airports can still be requested, I will choose the most interesting ones ;)

EGKA. Someone throw EGKA on the top of their list. Can't believe I forgot about that one.

PHWI is north of the leftmost "finger" of Pearl Harbor.

Any of those airports would be great to finish, but don't put too much pressure on yourself.

I have found a much better candidate airport than KEUG - EGBJ, Gloucestershire Airport.

Here are some pics displaying the issues, the main issue being the taxiways.

Is that Wheeler Army Airfield? That is PHHI (according to Wikipedia)...

-EGKA's runways and taxiways are finished. I will do the parking areas later on.
-KORD has it's seventh runway.

Expect both to be visible on the mapserver soon.

Seven !? I'm counting eight of these :-)

BTW, just an idea: If anyone has a few spare cycles as well as proper (and 'free' !!) imagery, I'd be happy to see a refined layout of EDWJ. Yet I have to acknowledge that imagery might pose a real problem - since, you know, Google is not an option.

Edit: .... and I don't have access to a setup (aircraft, to be precise) which allows to take orthophotos :-/

Cheers, Martin.

Yeah, but one of them (the north/south one) is closed and is used as taxiway now. We could replace it with a taxiway segment, but most of the time those taxi/runways still look a lot like runways. I did not have a look at recent aerial imagery though, so we might have to remove the rwy anyway...

I'd be happy to see a refined layout of EDWJ

Sadly Germany does not publish its AIP freely, so yeah, German airports are quite tricky to make.
