Question about EKVG.

Postby DaSovietPotato » Sun May 01, 2022 4:43 pm

I was flying to EKVG today and I noticed that neither of the ILS beacons contain a glide slope. I was wondering if this is a bug in my version or an intentional feature of the airport approach.

It is a bug that the airport has a localizer at all - see https://skyvector.com/airport/EKVG/Vagar-Airport

Is there any possible which would allow the glideslope not to appear? especially since the Faroe Islands are known for their almost constantly foggy weather.

There are localizers with a glideslope (ILS) and there are some without (pure LOC). EKVG has a pure LOC (without a glideslope) for both runways - that is not a bug of FG, because it's specified like this in $FGDATA/Navaids/nav.dat. In fact, there shouldn't be a localizer at all, according to SkyVector.

Actually according to the charts there is indeed a LOC (without G/S) for RWY 12 (offset to the centerline) and an ILS (with G/S) for RWY 30 (chart)

Okay, looks like SkyVector isn't always right ! Well, actually, the nav.dat file has, in addition to the two LOC entries, also two DME-ILS entries … is a GS included in that ?

Checking in sim, I see that the ILS for 30 is missing the glide. Interestingly this is also true for the navigraph 2202 AIRAC data

So considering that the lack of a glideslope on ILS 30, what would be an effective way for me to implement the glideslope in the files?

EKVG has a ILS/LOC for RWY 30 and LOC/DME or RWY 12, you can find this on the official charts from naviair.

To add the missing GS, make a new folder called for example "EKVG-ILS" (any name is possible) in a place of your choice. In that folder, create a folder "NavData" and inside the "NavData" folder create another one called "nav". Inside the "nav" folder create a file "nav.dat" and paste these two lines in it:
Code: Select all
6  62.06498337 -007.28536654    276 11030  26     296.178 MF   EKVG 31  ILS
99

Save that, then open up the FGLauncher and in the Addons tab, go to "Addon scenery" and add the "EKVG-ILS" to the list. Then restart FG - after it has updated its nav cache, you should have an ILS at EKVG runway 31 (except for if I got that line above wrong … but looks good to me)

I just tested the airport with the added changes, and I saw no change with the G/S. What is even more odd is that the Glide slope Tunnel still appears, however there is no detectable glide slope. I will probably take another look tomorrow or whenever I have time.

The lack of a glide slope on runway 30 is a bug. I contacted the airport directly and they stated that runway 30 contains a glide slope.

I think it's missing something to be a valid .dat file...
Code: Select all
I
6  62.06498337 -007.28536654    276 11030  26     296.178 MF   EKVG 31  ILS
99

Should be it...

Ah, yeah, at least the 99 at the end is mandatory. But the I at the beginning …

In common with most other X-Plane data file specification, header rows of data define the origin (“I” = Intel byte order or “A” = Motorola byte order) of a
particular copy of a file and define the file specification version. The file specification must include the four-digit AIRAC cycle date (e.g. 1602 for the AIRAC cycle
effective 4-Feb-16, refer to https://www.nm.eurocontrol.int/RAD/comm ... dates.html for cycle dates), an 8-digit build date and the reference to this
document. A copyright message may be added, while the total length of this line is not to exceed 1024 characters:
I
1150 Version - data cycle 1802, build 20200312, metadata NavXP1150. Copyright © 2020, Robin A. Peel (robin@xsquawkbox.net)...
Subsequent rows of data define each navaid, sequence as defined under “File Characteristics”.
The file is terminated by a ‘99’:
99
