Figured this out eventually for the texture buildings-lightmap.png. Apparently photoshop saves pngs with transparency rather than a separate alpha but it's possible to get the alpha back by using Layer>Layer Mask>From Transparency - once I'd done that I had to drag the layer mask off the layer and it revealed all the yellow (and red ) areas plus those lighting effects over doorways. It also revealed that the majority of this png was black - I though lightmaps should ideally be toned down, desaturated versions of the original daylight texture then use bright areas for the illumination seen at night - at least that's what I'll be aiming for and will test accordingly...

call for night time pictures of residential and office block windows - can you help with some textures for the new random building atlas?

Unfortunately, there are so many trees around my location that it's impossible to capture any buildings without a tree also on the picture ! :( But I have a few pictures of said trees, if that's of any help !

A smartphone camera will do the trick for the night time lit windows if your hands don't shake and you're within 20 meters or so. Don't get arrested ;)
I've taken a number at my home of the same window but opening and closing blinds and curtains to get 3 or 4 variants without much effort.
