Buildings 2021-22 Your location? Have a camera?

Postby Volador » Sun May 02, 2021 2:34 pm

As the title might suggest flightgear is in need of updated building scenery textures for future releases. As a run up to a development project my question is related purely to your rough location in the world and if you have access to a camera. Taking our own photographs means we can release them as CC0 /edit/ or one of the GPL /edit/ for use free of any copyright restrictions that we'd face getting photos from other sources. I can write a short tutorial on how to get a shot of what is needed / using manual camera setting etc but first things first, are you able to help contribute to improving the scenery - please answer the following questions :)

Questions:
1. Where are you? (eg Northern Europe / South Spain / North America / Canada / India / Hawaii / South Africa / Australia etc etc) give a city or region if you're happy to share that info.
2. Do you have access to a camera with manual settings (older manual digital cameras are fine)
3. Are you confident with the camera (I'm happy to write a short tutorial) longer lenses (zoom) to flatten perspective, know when the sun is behind the clouds ;)
4. Bonus question (do you own, and operate legally, a drone?)
5. Have you got a copy of Gimp photo editing software?

Early stages but it would be great to know who's able to get some photographs. Don't dash out snapping just yet though.

Hi Volador,

Central Europe, central Germany, four times yes, no drone.
Though I have no idea what your plan might be, taking pictures of typical landscape?

Thank you Oswald - let's see if we can get some representation from other places before I reveal more about this 'little' project

A smartphone camera is acceptable? I'm in Aveiro (Central Portugal), and I can use Gimp. Do not have any drone.

Hi AzulProfundo, it's great we've got some representation from Portugal, Thank you! A smartphone camera might be ok if you' are confident and can use the (pseudo) manual settings (more later and you will understand why). Let us see how far round the globe we can get responses from...

Are you aware of some images from osm2city. If I search a bit I might even find the originals. They are mainly from Germany.

Western Europe, Belgium, I don't have a camera but I do have a smartphone that I partially bought because of the high end camera (in smartphone terms, it has a lot of manual settings). I don 't have much real photograph experience, but I'm willing to learn and contribute. No drone. I don't have Gimp.

Hi Portreekid and Isaak, thank you both for responding! (Porteekid - are you intending to take some new photos? That is the goal here - and where are you? (Portree?)) Isaak, great! the smartphone may be ok if you know the settings well (eg turning off hdr, setting an exposure etc.)

I'm in Leipzig, Germany . If you look at most of the OSM2City screenshots you'll see work by me.

Wow five years. I'm afraid I don't actually have the time, but I just wanted to point you towards existing data.

  1. Southeast Asia
  2. I unfortunately do not; I have a smartphone and know how to use its "pro mode" for more manual settings though, but of course I cannot adjust the aperture on it.
  3. Those tasks don't sound that difficult to me, although naturally I don't have access to optical zoom.
  4. No, I don't have a drone
  5. Yes, I have Gimp

I'm in the suburbs, and the facades aren't exactly similar from building to building. Would this be a problem?
There are free alternatives to (almost) every program you encounter. You just have to find them.

Hi Parnikkapore, thank you for responding! I will also PM you relating to this project as I think it's you I've tried to contact via other channels, there may be an opportunity to get the word out for contributions and some simple graphics. Great that you know about the settings on your smartphone and great to have representation from Southeast Asia.
