Converting xplane scenery

Postby dom_vc10 » Wed Apr 07, 2021 3:54 pm

Hi All

I am interested in trying to convert some x-plane scenery. I found that we have a wiki page https://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Convert_objects_from_X-Plane for this however some of the links do not work. I managed to google a couple of things but I am stuck with two.

X-Plane scenery tools
perl helpers from FlightGear's source code:

calc-tile.pl
find_elevations.pl

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction please?

Hi,

Both seem to be available in the FlightGear source:
- https://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/fl ... lc-tile.pl
- https://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/fl ... vations.pl
They've not been touched for nearly two decades though, so I have no idea if they still work. But worth giving it a try ;-)

Cheers,
Gijs

PS: I have added/fixed the links on the wiki.

Awesome thanks

I will give this a try over the weekend. Could you maybe update one more link please? the xplane scenery tools I believe should now be https://developer.x-plane.com/tools/

I am interested if this will work, thanks again! :)

I already did that on the 7th ;-)
Note that you can create an account at the wiki to make these changes yourself. Help is very much appreciated and the wiki is a low-barrier entry into the FlightGear project!

Oops my bad. Thanks again.

I will definitely register myself for the wiki so can contribute at least some small things like this :)

Sorry to bring up my older topic.

I have tried to follow the wiki. There is a reference to xplane2fg.sh but the link to that is dead. A bit of internet searching I find https://github.com/mherweg/xplane2fg however the scripts there are python scripts. Is there anyone who is successfully converting scenery objects and placing them in some automated way? So far I have managed one small airport by converting the files in blender but then I have to place all objects using the UFO which takes some time. If someone has a current method to semi automate or automate the conversion would they be willing to share please?

what's wrong with using the python scripts?
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

The wiki is hard to follow it seems a couple of steps are not right anymore with regard to blender and now I was not sure about the python scripts as the wiki talks about the bash scripts… 12 hours in I’m lost.
So can I just use the py scripts in place of the sh? If so that’s one puzzle hopefully solved.

Are you using the scripts yourself successfully? I just spent another two hours going through the wiki and files. There are gaps as I think the wiki is rather old and I cannot get any further with my limited knowledge.

no, i'm not using the python scripts... i don't currently develop scenery... i thought the scripts you found were in working order but i hadn't looked at that repo until just now... seeing them being 6 years old and marked as "extremely alpha" i think i might keep looking for other similar solutions... that or keep manually plugging about trying to understand and figure out the manual blender way...

No worries. I have managed through some searching to get a small python script set up that uses the blender plugins I have to import and export in a batch. So step 1 converting models quick and automatic is done.

My issue now is to avoid manually placing the objects with the UFO. I see the scripts on our wiki should give the possibility to read the earth nav data from the zip scenery and generate the lines for the FG stg file. Not sure if I can manage to figure that out but let’s see. If anyone with some decent scripting knowledge could help here it would be appreciated.

If it's just earth.nav -> .stg that should be fairly easy... idk about that script you've got but just writing one from scratch should be rather stright forward.

Yes just that but it's the dsf file in the earth nav data folder to stg. So then I shouldn't need to use the UFO for placement. I am able to amend a script sometimes to fit it to my purposes but I am far from being able to write this unfortunately.

One of the scripts here, https://github.com/mherweg/xplane2fg, I presume should do it but they are all together as a package and I don't need the blender conversion part

Okay... just gave it a quick look... some stuff (like the dds to png script) seems rather inefficient for larger automatic action as it's single threaded.

If you want, you can hop on matrix (or irc, main room is bridegd) in the evening and ping me there, then we can have a chat about what you exactly need and how we can solve it.
