Is it possible to create fictional scenery for Flightgear?

Postby Airimder » Tue Mar 30, 2021 11:39 pm

Naturally, the primary way to use Flightgear is with real-world, real-Earth scenery, but is there any way that one can create fictional terrain and use it in Flightgear? Apologies if this is not the right place to ask.

FG runs no checks whether the scenery is fictional or not - if you use fictional data in the toolchain that generates terrain, it's going to produce fictional terrain.

For fictional terrain, the only "obstacle" is that you need to generate the data to use yourself. You will need the following:

* Airports: These are normally the easiest to make, using X-Plane's WorldEditor
* Shapefiles (aka Landcover): You can also draw these rather easily, e.g. using QGIS
* Elevation data: This is a bit more complicated, but thanks to SurferTim's HGT editor (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=36143&), this should also be not too difficult, best would probably be to download an existing tile of SRTM data and then modifying it to your needs.

See also https://wiki.flightgear.org/Using_TerraGear for more information on how to use this data to build scenery.

What's your plan? Gilligan's Island? Atlantis? Middle Earth?
If you need help with the HGT file editor for elevations, let me know.

Edit: If Middle Earth, may I suggest LOTR for the ICAO ID.

Middle Earth would be so great! We have a model of Barad Dûr already: https://scenery.flightgear.org/app.php?c=Objects&a=view&id=3303093 :-P

And I would suggest the dragon and Eagles as a proper mode of transportation.

All joking aside, over the years a number of long-time contributors have expressed some interest in modeling other "worlds" (celestial bodies), including the moon or Mars.

Thus, fictional or not, this might be of interest to a number of folks here: https://wiki.flightgear.org/Reaching_for_the_stars

This guy has made two posts so far. Both have received replies, none of which have been acknowledged.
