Often with a large apt, you will find that one or more lines of code get through WED but will not get through Genapts850. You haven't stated this, so this may be a premature assumption.

But if it is the case, then you must hide lines of code, export the apt, then run it through Genapts850 again. If it generates a btg.gz file, you know the "bad" lines of code are among the hidden lines. Usually these "bad" lines of code are in the "Markings" section, so I will first hide the entire section. If the exported apt will generate a btg.gz, the you have confirmed the bad line(s) is/are within the Markings section. If not, hide another section, like taxiways. Do this until you have identified which section or sections contain the bad lines.

Once you've determined the section(s) containing bad lines, use the bisection method to find the bad line or lines. In other words, hide half the lines at a time, export the apt, run genapts and see if you are successful. If so, hide half the remaining "unhidden" lines and try again. Do this until you have identified which line(s) are the bad ones.

Often, you can fix a bad marking or taxiway by simply redrawing the marking or taxiway, then hide or delete the bad marking or taxiway and run again.

So, i discovered the problem with the Apt.dat was these white lines here:

After i removed it, it worked.

but now, i'm experiencing holes in the scenery. I have the impression it has to do with the OSM data i downloaded having an airport landclass. i tried deleting the airport boundary, but then the scenery wouldnt load in the simulator. This made me worried as there are other airports in the gateway that have no boundaries assigned.


so, how do i get rid of those holes?

Hi lomar,
these holes typically arise when there is a difference between the airport boundary as used to generate the airport itself and the boundary used to cut the hole into the rest of the terrain.
For me, often one of these would cause the issue:
* Generated airport but no surrounding terrain, then pasting the new airport and the old terrain together
* Elevation update, afterwards re-generating terrain but not running genapts850 again

so, i rdone it from scrratch and could get rid of the big holes in the appron. But there are still these seams in the edges. I tested lots of different settings and still could not fix it. there is this huge height difference in some places.





also, I forgot do ask: what would be a reasonable number to input in the runway slope angle?

I have to say this thread has helped me a lot - i've been trying to improve my local airport (EHKD - Den Helder/De Kooy Naval Airbase) from the standard scenery as the standard scenery has about 70% of the airport missing!

The X-Plane World Editor version was more or less complete so i've been wanting to replace the default FG one with this version. I tried in the past but could never figure out how to do it, usually ending up giving up in frustration. Partly because I'd never been able to find anywhere with the steps documented in one place (Mac specific in particular - my google skills are obviously not very good ).

Now with the help of this thread, I've finally figured it out, so thanks all for helping to point me in the right direction.

In case it helps anyone else, here's the steps i've followed which seem to work for me. This is on OS X Big Sur. and FG 2020.3.6

1) Make sure you have some prerequisites installed - firstly you need the xcode command line tools - install by opening a terminal and typing

You also need git (which comes with the Xcode tools) and python2 - OS X only comes with python 3 so the easiest way to get python 2 is to install 'homebrew' and then install the python2 cask.

2) Make a directory for working in and storing the needed executables. Open a terminal in this directory.

3) In this directory, clone the d-laser-fgtools tools

4) in the master working directory, make a directory for the airport - in my case EHKD. open a terminal in this directory.

5) in the airport directory, download the airport you want to update from the X Plane gateway by using the gateway_pull.py script - when in the airport directory:

python2 ./../d-laser-fgtools/gateway_pull.py - i <airport ICAO code>

6) convert the airport from X-plane to flightgear with the dsf2aptdat.py script - in the airport directory

7) open the <airport>.dat created by the script in X-Plane World Editor to check it's got everything needed, make any edits, then export to a new .dat if required, making sure to export in X Plane 10.5 format.

8 ) open the resulting <airport>.dat file in a text editor and rearrange the first few lines as follows:
a) First line needs to be a capital letter 'I' (as in India)
b) second line needs to the airport descriptor
c) third line needs to be '1050 Generated by WorldEditor 2.3.1r1' (or whichever version was used)

9) upload the resulting .dat file to the flightgear airport web generator - http://ns334561.ip-5-196-65.eu/tgweb/ and follow the instructions. Then download the zip the site generates that contains the airport .btg file. Put this in the working directory for now. Note i'm using the web generator as i've not managed to get terragear and genapt850 installed locally on OS X yet (still working on it).

10) Copy the .btg and .dat file to a custom scenery folder as described here https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=30734 and specify this scenery path in the launcher.

11) Launch flightgear with the UFO at the new airport and check everything is as it should be,

This is what i've been able to work out, and it seems to be working, but is there anyting i've missed or done wrong? I've also generated EHTX Texel using the same technique which also added a lot of missing details.

I have another question. What happens if the apt.dat lacks a boundary? is it still possible to build the airport in the scenery? or do i have to manually draw a boundary in order for it to work?

why some airports on the x-plane gateway have taxiway centerlines with no line atributes? do they still get shown in the simulator?
