I'm shuting the buildprocess down right now as I've implemented major changes to the way, things work internaly. In addition I'll use the chance to update the database and from that point on I plan to keep the osm database fresh with daily updates. In addidion I'll chance my storage configuration from using RAIDZ2 to an RAID10... I hope, ~8TB is enough instead of the current ~12TB(due to me having only 5 drives so I can only put 4 in the RAID or I'd loose redundency).

I'll let you know, when I fire it back up.

Aww, so close before finishing the central european tiles.

Well, but I at least have enough other things to do to pass the time. So no problem. :D

Re: osm2city worldbuild

I'm in the process of building some U.S. scenery and plan to use osm2city Worldbuild scenery on top. So I'm wondering what the default roads/railroad and width settings are used in the osm2city Worldbuild scenery. I want to include all the OSM roads and railroads NOT included in the Worldbuild, whether primary, secondary, tertiary or other. I've been seeing some mismatch in widths of roads between the two. Are secondary, tertiary and smaller roads included in the Worldbuild?
Thanks in advance for your help!

For what it's worth, I tried this approach (custom scenery with merspeiler's osm2city roads on top) and didn't get good results. Since the elevation doesn't match the Terrasync scenery exactly, the roads go in and out of the terrain a lot. Personally, I decided to just take the roads from OSM data and bake them directly into the terrain, which ensures they never go in and out of the terrain and gives me control over the width of each type too. I still use osm2city for bridges and buildings, though. Buildings from the worldbuild work better with custom terrain than roads do. There are still elevation mismatches, but it's not as noticeable as with roads. You might also end up with buildings in the water or missing buildings where the default scenery has water but yours does not.

I'm running it with HIGHWAY_TYPE_MIN = 3 please check the docs/code to see which roads this includes exactly and how wide they are.

montagdude is right... I had this problem my self...

My issue with baking streets into the terrain is, that it doesn't always match the streets generated by osm2city so you've got partitially two roads... and you don't have the shader cars moving, street illumination etc.

IMO the best solution is to build a custom osm2city for the custom scenery.

Thanks for the information and suggestions @montagdude and @merspieler. I will proceed as you suggest, creating custom osm2city for the custom scenery.
By the way, @merspieler, the Worldbuild is a great enhancement to FlightGear! I'm looking forward to seeing it in Terrasync in the near future.

Scenery:
Download size: 86.1 GiB
Size: 506.6 GiB

Build:
Duration: 50 days
Total logfile size: 15.9 GiB

Scenery breakdown (disk size/apparent size/number of files):
Code: Select all
disk size        apparent size    number of files
Total:         506.6 GiB        419.6 GiB        4858967
Roads:         286.9 GiB        238.1 GiB        2510535
Pylons:        156.7 GiB        127.8 GiB        1283881

I've only just got back into FlightGear and see the visuals have improved quite a bit from the last time :D

I love to fly visually so the more details the better!

I've been playing with QGIS and Terragear with mixed results which has been fun to learn something new, but have come to the conclusion that the best way to improve what we have right now is to contribute to OSM with landmark buildings and maybe model some specific ones I know to be missing.

osm2city worldbuild will make a huge difference to the visuals around airports and towns so I'm very excited to see this integrated into terrasync.

As usual with forums/wikis there is confusing information around so hopefully someone will answer here:-

I tried to download some of the 'current' worldbuild data to try it out and FG 2019.1.2 crashed, am I running the wrong version?

What is the current stumbling block, what needs to happen?

Why is this, are you still sorting the hardware, or something else?

Basically, is there anything we can do to help to make this happen soon :)

Cheers!

I'm my self not sure which versions currently really work... so I keep saying you need next/nightly for it.

The core guys need to have the code in place and start pulling the scenery into terrasync. Nothing I can do there.

Currently I've got other things(tm) running on the server.

Basically, is there anything we can do to help to make this happen soon :)

Nag the core guys to push things forward...(I totally didn't say that :P )

Hi MERSPIELER
very nice, fantastic job, congratulations you contributed more beautiful FG.

DONTMAILME, if fg crash, follow instructions in :
https://osm2city.readthedocs.io/en/late ... enery-path
scroll below in --Change Materials to Not Crash FG for Sceneries with Shader Buildings (BUILDING_LIST) -
me too (FG 2019.1.1 O.S win 8.1) first crash, but following the instructions now work nice.
bye

A lil update...

I've got sick of waiting and the core ppl changing their minds, so I won't bother repackaging the files for terrasync.

This means, that it will come when ever they go and do the conversion them selfs.

The scenery remains available for manual download as before.

Hi

New user here. I moved from FS9 to FG a few months ago and seem to finally understand FG a lot more. This project seems amazing I have been lurking in the forum here to see any updates for a while. In the post above it says files can manually be downloaded, I have been looking through the thread but only saw links for an older build. Maybe I need new glasses but could someone point me in the right direction to the download links please?
Thanks!

Hey dom_vc10,
welcome to flightgear.

Here's the link: https://cdn.merspieler.tk/osm2city/current/

You can download the area you like.

The areas are named by their south-western corner.

For example: Cairns is at lat -16.9, lon 145.8.
The sourth western corner of that area is lat -17, lon 145 so the name is e145s17 which can be found in the e140s20 directory.

This map will help you, finding the coordinates: https://scenery.flightgear.org/map/
