I don't think so - the terrainfiles are gzip-packed in certain chunks, so however you do it, you need to download the chunk and unpack it, you can't access the content of a chunk without downloading it first.

(Leaving aside the question of why you'd want this in the first place...)

You can use TerraMaster to download the subtiles you need which cover areas of 0.01 degree^2. For instance, w072n54 is a subtile of w080n50.

TerraSync shouldn't download the whole tile at once - it should only download what it needs, again the subtitles?

TerraSync nabs the tiles from the same source as TerraMaster.

Granted, OP could've snatched the file straight from the TerraSync repo (it's plain HTTP), but Thorsten would've told him to fo that.
There are free alternatives to every program you encounter. You just have to find them.

Yeah, but its not pulling the whole tiles (multiple GB in some cases) and slicing it up - its only downloading what it needs. And TerraSync should be doing that too?

Not sure what he means by a 'tile' and 'a few files' - I've assumed he means a packaged chunk, not a square degree, because clearly that's the smallest unit TS or TM fetch.

No,
TerraMaster downloads files from the same server as TerraSync.

It will allow you to pick and choose which tiles you want. It won't allow you to choose just the airport but definitely will allow you the 1x1 degree area.

TerraMaster allows you to choose 0.1x0.1 deg sections - it doesn't come smaller than that. TS will download the same chunkiness, except everything in visual range, so if you start with a large visibility you'll get more than you like.

forgive me but it has to else how are you supposed to see 370km around you at 35000 ft altitude? at that height, the radius of the circle around you to the horizon is really that far... if you're that high up and you have only 50km set for visibility, you're going to see an island of similar nature to what you have now which is not really realistic if you're after realism...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

i understand your reasoning completely... you're doing great with your endeavor :)

i'm kinda waiting on someone to pop in with something about not really being able to see anything 370km away at 35000ft due to atmospheric distortion and hazing but... hehehe...

i may also have confused visibility with LOD... the LOD system is not (yet) variable so that it expands as you go higher and shrinks as you get lower... so if the LOD is set for the horizon at 35000ft, those tiles are loaded even when you are on the ground... i was actually speaking of the LOD earlier but i do generally keep my visibility set to the same as my max LOD...

i'm one who flys in FG because i want to look at the scenery since i cannot go there in RL any more...
