Using TerraGear in Docker

Postby pb321 » Fri Mar 08, 2019 6:53 pm

Docker Toolbox is set up on my computer. It runs "hello-world" with the proper results and will respond correctly to "docker container ls -a", listing Container ID, Image, Command, Created, and Status fields as it should for "hello-world" and "flightgear/terragear:latest". I've never used Docker before.
I've tried "docker run -I -t "c:\users\SH\Documents\Docker_IMT\[TerraGear Directory Name] flightgear/terragear /bin/bash", where Docker_IMT is the folder containing the project and TerraGear Directory Name is the folder containing data, output and work files. This results in the prompt "flightgear@[ID]:~$". Is this where I start entering TerraGear commands? Is this the correct way to start the project?

...what exactly do you want to achieve by running terragear inside a docker container?

Build scenery with the latest TerraGear toolchain per http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Docker_scenery_toolchain and option 1c of this link http://wiki.flightgear.org/Using_TerraGear.

I see. That sounds like a good thing to do. Sadly I don't know enough about terragear to help, the docker instructions on the wiki are extremely generic instructions about how to run "something" in docker, not more...

Thanks for your reply, @Lemmy. I had thought this was still under development, but a recent post led me to believe otherwise, so I thought I'd try it. At least I'm part way there. I suspect the rest will follow in the months ahead.

@pb321,

Best to connect with Torsten if you have Docker questions. e.g. try a few experiments before you do extensive Terragear work in a Docker container. You need to know how to save your image so you don't lose your important work.

For that all you'd need to do is to mount a local directory into the container and use that as your work folder... I just don't know anything about terragear so I can't tell you where inside the container that should be, and what the structure shoudl be.

I'm running a few containers myself that delete themself on exit but still the actual data is persistent :)
