X-Plane Gateway

Postby Ivan-Pekar » Sun Apr 29, 2018 12:45 pm

On the X-Plane Gateway, there are several airports that have already been created. In the FlightGear wiki, it states that this gateway is used for airports in FlightGear. I have created a few airports, and I am wondering when they will be added to the FlightGear 'scenery release'. Can anyone tell me, please:
-What I need to do for my airports to be included
-When the next scenery release date will be

Thank you very much,
Ivan

there is no scheduled date for scenery...

if you have added your airports to the x-plane gateway and they have been accepted there, they should be included in the next update FG gets from the gateway...

FG cannot just update the apt.dat and similar files to bring new airports and updates to existing airports into the FG scenery... the entire world scenery has to be rebuilt, too... it has to be rebuilt because the airports are actually fit into holes cut into the scenery mesh specifically for them... building the world scenery takes a very long time... on the order of weeks and weeks... when an error occurs, the build process has to be restarted after the error is fixed... the last experimental build of newer scenery took over a month to run and it wasn't even the entire world...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Another question about the Gateway:
I've upgraded a few airports and had them accepted by the Gateway and am anxiously awaiting their appearance in FlightGear. One of the airports was superseded by a "3D" airport layout that doesn't include as much of the paved/cement/gravel/dirt areas and other details as mine. However, it is now the Gateway -recommended version. It doesn't work as well with the FlightGear models I've placed. Is there a way to have the airport file I created placed in the next FG scenery update, so there will be an airport that closely matches the placed FG objects? (I don't have X-Plane, so it would be difficult to make a good X-Plane 3D version).

Tell me which airport it is, and I will merge your layout and the 3D layout and upload it to the gateway.

Best,
Jonathan

Excellent! It was the first airport I did and there are a couple small things I'd like to correct first (a couple signs and taxiway lines). I'll get back to you when done via email so I can attach the file. Thank you!

Thank you very much for the answer, wkitty42.

To Jonathan,
One of my airports is USMM, which is 'accepted' on the gateway.
Thank you.

Hi Ivan,
unfortunately I have nothing to do with getting it into FlightGear. I was responding to pb321. Apologies,
Jonathan

Ivan, I noticed your USMM has been "Accepted" but not yet "Approved". This may take a few days. Then it will be available for download and to the next FG scenery generation. The next scenery generation is being worked on using a new technique. See "Dockers Updates" at this link: http://wiki.flightgear.org/FlightGear_N ... ruary_2018. I
So it could be your airport will be in FG late this year (hopefully).

Ivan, if you're not already aware, you can use the Flightgear Airport Web Generator (http://ns334561.ip-5-196-65.eu/tgweb/ ), add your airport to Flightgear on your computer and fly at USMM in Flightgear now. It doesn't handle elevation changes like Terragear and won't show signs you may have placed. A small part of the airport taxiways might be covered by land, but I've found it quite useful and it might get you much closer to your goal.

pb321, this is exactly what I need. Thank you very much! What I do though when the file gets downloaded as .zip? Where do I extract it to?

1. Create a new directory such as c:\documents\MyFGScenery\
2. Add the same subfolder structure as in your terrasync folder:
MyFGScenery\objects\e080n60\e072n62
\terrain\e080n60\e072n62
3. Copy all files from the terrasync\terrain\e080n60 folder and paste in the terrain folder you created in step 2.
4. Extract the file from the Web Airport Generator to a folder of your choice.
5. Copy the USMM.btg.gz file from the folder created in step 4 and paste it in the terrain folder you created in step 2.
6. If you created any models and uploaded them to the Scenery Database, they should be in the \objects folder under the correct latitude/longitude subfolders for your airport. Copy the \objects\e080n60 folder and paste into the \objects folder created in step 2.
7. Launch FlightGear. Click Add-Ons and add the C:\MyFGScenery folder under "Additional scenery locations".
8. Change your location to Airport USMM and continue to launch as normal. You should arrive at your airport and be ready to fly.
