Okay, some updates from my side: The first test-process is done (Sydney and Canberra), there are still two major problems:
*OSM Roads, Railways and Rivers, unfortunately the data I can obtain from download.geofabrik.de is damaged, (at least) the roads are broken. Statto, do you have any alternate datasource for OSM lines of Australia?
*Lakes: For some very strange reason I couldn't find out yet, terragear doesn't include Lakes into the output and maps them as Ocean instead (resulting in deep holes with water in them at sea level)

[EDIT] currently downloading the airports data for the rest of Australia, currently 500 apts downloaded :D

I normally get the OSM Data directly from QGIS (Menu Vector / OpenStreetMap) I can send you my shapefiles for Sydney but they are not covering the burbs

Cheers

I've also tried this but when downloading whole Australia, the roads are damaged in the same way as the other download

Some new update: Downloading and pre-processing all airports with ICAO-code starting "Y" completed, now test-building area around Melbourne to see if lake problem also appears there

How are the roads "broken?"

Will check the lake/ocean problem, I thought I had fixed this issue.

I meanwhile managed to fix the problem, it was that lake can cut holes into underlying classes but can't make up owns (more or less), so I decoded Lake as "Lake" as well as as "Default", so now it works :D
The roads are broken means that there are gaps in them:Image

I can't recreate your error.

1. I downloaded all of Australia from geofabrik
2. I downloaded and installed the newest version of osmosis
3. I ran:
Code: Select all
bin/osmosis --read-pbf file=australia-latest.pbf --tf accept-ways highway=* --tf reject-ways highway=residential --used-node --write-xml file=australia-highways.osm

(Lots of minor ways, so I should have run:)
Code: Select all
bin/osmosis --read-pbf file=australia-latest.pbf --tf accept-ways highway="motorway,motorway_link,primary,secondary,tertiary,unclassified" --used-node --write-xml file=australia-highways.osm

4. Opened it up in QGIS, did the Spatialite import/export and everything seems to have worked.

I did the same as you did now and it seemed to work, my fault before was probably to try importing the pbf directly into QGIS and thus having some importer problem
