Please Critique Shared Scenery Additions to KTKI

Postby David in TX » Wed May 31, 2017 3:23 am

I've added shared scenery to McKinney National Airport. This is the first airport I've added a lot of objects to. Before continuing with others in the area, I'd like some feedback on the choice and placement of the models.

A view of the airport is on OpenMaps. Select the Texas Orthophoto edit layer for the latest image. https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/33.1770/-96.5892

Very neat scenery building. Well done.

I await the massive import so I can validate your input.

I don't think KTKI is double runway airport like your pictures, as seen in OpenStreetMap where is single. Maybe this is a layout error on FG.

Yes, the layout is incorrect. I'm still struggling to understand how to fix it (1) locally on my machine; and (2) on the scenery server. Something, something TerraGear?

Alternativey you can install TerraGit to see an updated layout until someone (you?) generate newer terrain.

Which may however become incompatible with future FG versions as it's a 3rd party repository.

That smaller runway (right one in your picture) is supposed to be a taxy way, i checked it on X-plane gateway and seems there aren't major differences, so i think you can develop over existing layout without dramatic changes in the future if newer terrain is generated. A different case is if the layout is completly wrong or even not exists.
As Thorsten said, 3rd party repository may be incompatible with future FG versions (newer terrains) but if you need an airport to be developed before its your decision and it can be shipped as custom scenery on your own sources. In the future, if you want to develop an airport in FG, check before if the existing layout is finished or looks like real.

The terrain generation problem is one I still can't get my head around. I understand that the terrain hasn't been refreshed from the XPlane gateway in a substantial period of time, but I don't understand why. What would it take to refresh the terrain at every release? There is ~3 months until the next one. Even if it takes six weeks to regenerate the terrain, the changes could be locked two months out and the processing started. This strikes me as something not that complicated, spin up some servers, run some scripts and wait. Maybe even a noob like me could do that.

I'm new around here, but this strikes me as absurd. The terrain was generated at some point and even updated without "1-2 paid positions and a supercomputer farm." The actual terrain of Earth hasn't changed since then, only airport layouts.

In this case, I suggest you download the tools, run a few scripts and do it yourself. We'll be happy to ship your seamless world scenery 3.0, and even happier if you manage to have a short release cycle.

(It would seem plain by now that you are new around here and have no real idea how the terrain was done - and no real idea of things like that while the actual terrain doesn't change, the knowledge of it in terms of freely usable geodata does a lot, or that you can't re-generate 'just' an airport without generating ugly seams in the elevation mesh all over the place,...).

keep calm, if eveybody here's trying to get something or asking becomes that answer,.. well.. a lot can be done learning step by step and try it self. that means asking things like that, no matter what and which level of knowledge, but with recent PC hardware and free hours we can get a lot of things so, few people have a server farm on their garage with a team 8 hours/day for a free open source project.

I just tend to get tired of people who tell me what should be possible but leave the how to others. As I said - anyone who believes X is easy ought to go ahead and do it. In practically all cases I am aware, the people who have actually done it changed their opinion quickly.

The folks behind TerraGit have completely regenerated the world scenery 2 or 3 times now in the last nine months (maybe more I haven't been following TOO closely). I also know that they're wanting another run to fix their random canyon bug when they get that fixed.
