Hello Thorsten

Thank you for your interest.
As far as I see it, I did what I did according to the principles you describe above, and I fully agree to what you say.

EDIT: some text removed

Now with carriers we are in a zone between FGData and FGAddon.
I use the activity around the new carrier to also publish what I did with carriers since over a year now, as I found there were things already started, broken, unused or missing, like integrating Carrier Tower into Tower handling of FG.

EDIT: some text removed

Thanks again for your interest

Work on Truman CVN-75 has advanced.
Hangar and all Elevators are usable now.

see: https://gitlab.com/mhab/Flightgear-Carrier-Upgrade

Remarks: The Elevator and Hangar addition required major restructuring (objects/groups) and even resizing of some parts of the carrier, as the elevators on deck were not in sync with the doors below and not in correct size it was a bit of much more work than expected.

As for now the result is quite promising.

Let me know what you think, if you use it or find problems ...

Have fun

Some new addition for Truman Carrier:

All aircraft elevators have improved texture for the deck frame and animated security rails on deck and for the bay doors now.
They move like on the real carriers before the elevator starts and after it arrives.
... and the elevator cannot reverse direction of movement before it arrives.

Some additions are still in planning, like improved/more detailed elevator modelling ... and maybe some sound during elevator movement ...

Have fun

FGUK has made a good carrier sound pack for the current ones, if I find the download link I'm gonna share it over here cause it might be helpful.

@J Maverick 16: Is the sound pack GPLv2+ licensed so that the carrier can be pushed back upstream into the AI directories of FGData?

Yes, pretty sure it is. Once I find it you'll see it here ;) .
Cheers, Maverick

Some news on Truman

The elevators are more detailed now and moved by wires ;-)
The Truman scenario received start/parking positions in the hangar (hangar-1 ... hangar-4),
so you can start down in the hangar, take the elevator up to deck,
drive to the catapult of your choice lock into it and take off.
Hint: hangar-2 is the easiest for first try ;-)

See some screenshots: (click to enlarge)

Elevators 2+3 lowered, F14 ready to go back into the hangar

Elevator 4 lowered, Tower view on moving Elevator 2

Hi mhab,

thank you very much for your high detailed work on the Nimitz-class carrier. Really amazing.
I loaded it down from the link above, unpacked and installed it.
First I wasn´t able to start FG with the aircrafts startposition on deck Truman. I used the variables from the wiki "howto:aircraft carrier" :
--ai-scenario=truman_demo
--carrier=Truman
--parkpos=cat-2
by putting them into the "Settings/Advanced settings" field of the QT-launcher.
I experimented a while with the settings and always FGFS crashed during scenery load.
Then I marked the "Start paused" checkbox. After that the FGFS started, but with my aircraft positioned in the water nearby the carrier.
After "reset flight" FGFS came up with the aircraft at the starboard front cat-position (don´t know if its no. 1 or 2, but usually numbering on naval vessels is odd numbers at starboard, even numbers at port side).
Now I could fly around and practice carrier landings with this fine model :D

I assume the crashes on normal loading come from the time that is needed to load the HD-carrier-model, so when the aircraft model load is finished the carrier model is not present.

I couldn´t get the elevators working. I clicked them and nothing happened. Also the move elevator checkbox in the AI/aircraft carrier window didn´t work.

I will do some further testing in the next days, maybe I´ll find some solution.

Cheers, Solid 8)

Hello Solid

Thank you for the detailed description on what you did :D

Some things come to mind:
1) the carrier upgrade should work for FG 2016 and 2017.1
--> I didn't test it for newer versions
2) Did you follow the readme and install all files of the ZIP ?
There are several files not directly related to carrier models ...
--> if yes maybe it helps to remove the carriers from previous FG location "data/Models/Geometry/Nimitz"
I didn't test if these interfere if they are there ;-)
3) If ressources are the limiting factor, try Vinson, which uses the same textures but has not so many details
--> if Vinson also gives problems, try Nimitz or last resort Eisenhower, which is the "cheapest" model
--> also try Vinson or Nimitz for animations of elevators, etc.

Basically the resource consumption for Truman is by far the highest for several reasons:
- Truman model has most details and textures
- the escort ship following directly behind (CG-57) is of extra high detail
- the Cruise ship is also very resource consuming
--> You may comment them out in the scenario definition for testing purpose.

Personal experiences:
In FG 2017.1 the scenery loading may take eternities, I don't know why
On my console I often see " ... takes very long ..." or similar comments
Sometimes it helped ( after I fell asleep waiting 10min for scenery) to kill FG and start new
sometimes it helped to switch off internet connection to avoid updating scenery which was already there ;-)

Good luck
Mike-DE

mhab, feature request: please disable observer view except when you launch at a carrier if possible ;) Thanks!

Reason: my view constantly resets to obvserver view which is outside the aircraft when I am in cockpit view

Hello legoboyvdlp
It is very easy to disable a view via menu View/View Options, and this setting remains/survives until next session.
"Observer View" is a view useful for RC model like flying and not related to carriers.

For my understanding:
- What action causes your view to reset to Observer View ?
- Why would you like to have Observer View for carriers ?

Happens to me as well.
If I remember correctly, when I fly F-14 and trying to click a knob/control on the panel with my mouse, instead of switching the control
I often get "Observer position set" message and then any right-click with mouse switches me into the observer.
Very annoying...

I see :?

I did that, so it is possible to teleport yourself to any place on the ground and watch the aircraft from there.

I use it often when I land the helicopter, again as I am used to this mode from RC model flying.

The mechanism is implemented in a way so whenever you click anywhere, where no other binding is active, a popup indicates that a ground position was marked and a right click teleports you within 8 sec after the position was marked.

I wanted to do this with a right click directly but that is not possible for FG internal limitations with mouse click event handling.

So if you don't like this behaviour deactivate Observer View and the unwanted view switching should be gone.

B.T.W on carriers this doesn't work as intended as the function to evaluate the ground position ignores carriers and always gives positions at sea level.

Thank you for the feedback and let me know if more customization is needed.
