Thanks for the suggestions ...

Meanwhile there is some more progress going on ...

Status Truman CVN-75 port (was Nimitz):
    - all four cats operational
    - JBDs animated, specific for the used cat
    - new TACAN channel 031X implemented and operational
    - CG-57 escort switched to high detail model (which was already there)
    - all escort ships have nice wave/wake animations
    - Scenario near Hawaii setup
    - a new cruise ship I found in the web.

EDIT:

Still some work to do

Hello Mike. you seem to be making good progress here. Do you just want '68' changing to '75' - or would you prefer the Gimp .xcf files or have I to export as .psd?

Hello karla
Thanks for your offer. As for me a change from 68 to 75 woud be fine and sufficient.
I need it for the island. Near the cats I removed it, but could add it again.

From pics of real carriers the CVN number doesn't seem to be consistently showed near the cat 1+2 runways.
Remark:
I don't plan on other texture changes, as it is really very well done and so I don't need more than the updated png files.

Thanks for your excellent work

Hello
EDIT:
I had a bit time to play around with the new cruise ship, ... removed for copyright reasons

P.S.: I'm still waiting for a feedback from the author about the plans to use it in FG ...

Hello Mike-DE, .png textures for CVN-75 are available here - (link removed, -3May17, 7 downloads)

They contain the island, bow flightdeck and - of course - the name on the stern. Have fun, thank you for your effort and I'm pleased that I'm able to make a small contribution to FGFS again.

I don't visit very much, so if you want to get in touch about this model, PM me.

Hello again

Thanks to karla for the CVN-75 textures. They are used now.

Here are some screenshots of current state of Truman CVN-75 (click to enlarge)
Image Image Image Image

Before I do the first post to my gitlab hangar I plan for the following improvements:
- fix some errors on stern (where b.t.w. all existing nimitz class carriers in FG are wrong)
- animate the aerial whip antennas (like on vinson version)

Lower prio enhancements (not really decided yet):
- finish lower hangar deck
- animate elevators

One thing is for sure: Upcoming Truman scenario will be a really high detailed thing and require some good graphics power.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!
I love operation on carriers, looking forward to it. ;) Nice to see some interesting ship development recently in FG.

Hello, for all interested

The first prototype of a Flightgear-Carrier-Upgrade is available for testing.

see https://gitlab.com/mhab/Flightgear-Carrier-Upgrade

check the Readme file and the Wiki of the Gitlab project ...

Warning:
Please be aware, that using this upgrade is changing some FG internal settings/files and you need to be aware of risks and the danger of breaking things.
Make a backup copy of your installation before you change it
This upgrade may someday become part of FG but is just a prototype for now.

Some of the major improvements are:
- Animations on Carriers for
    all JBDs catapult specific
    all Elevators individually
Whip Antennas down during flight ops
Bay Doors for stormy weather protection
- Glidepath for improved approach
- Tower sync option for Tower View
- Deck Park for all Nimitz Class carriers
- Wave and Wake effects for all ships
- and more ...

The code is still under heavy development and may change anytime.

Have fun and let me know if there are problems ...

Hello again ...

I added also MPCarrier to the gitlab repo https://gitlab.com/mhab/Flightgear-Carrier-Upgrade

... so you can use CVN-75 Truman in MP mode as captain and control it.

see some screenshots in gitlab Wiki https://gitlab.com/mhab/Flightgear-Carrier-Upgrade/wikis/mpcarrier-truman

Erm how is it possible to download the code from your gitlab repo? I couldn't find any code tab or clone link...

Out of curiosity - what is it you don't find adequately supported by the default install?

@Thorsten
Some of the things are new functions in "view.nas" like
setting a view directly instead of scrolling through the views,
autohide HUD,
autozoom for some views,
a new "Observer View" a Fly-By view which doesn't reposition, ...
additions in "default.xml", because user specific default.xml didn't work for me as it should
...
Then a whole set of functions which are carrier related
Additions to FG Dialogs ,...

If you want to check it, see the gitlab repo. It contains the carrier related changes only and so is easy to see what I changed.

Thanks for your interest.

Let's say I'm interested from a technical perspective - do we miss things which should be on FGData (aka, do I need to commit some stuff)?

The general idea is at least that one should be able to add things in a fairly modularized way, i.e. a self-contained AI-scenario, a self-contained plane (since we can for instance have Nasal inside xml wrappers).

If that's not the case, I start getting interested, because I'd like to have FGData in a state where you can run things modularized.

For instance autohide HUD or auto-zoom for specific views can reside aircraft-side (assuming we're talking about driving the carrier as 'aircraft' and not AI scenario) and you should not touch view.nas to accomplish it - that holds for basically any new view.

The same is actually true for anything that's AI scenario specific - since AI scenarios can bring their own Nasal, and since dialogs can be dynamically altered by Nasal code, you should not have to edit xml files to accomplish what you want.

Basically code should only reside in the general GUI xml / view.nas etc. if it's useful for every airplane, it should only go to the general Nasal directory if it's something people might generally use, and otherwise it should be modularized.

(The view manager status is... kind of complicated. There's at least two mutually exclusive addons to it floating around, FGCamera and g-force movement, and while there was an intention to use FGCamera at some point, the developer seems to have disappeared...)
