So I copy all the .eff files to ...\FlightGear 2016.2.1\data\Effects? Sounds plausible, but I don't have a file "roads-high.eff", only "cityLM.eff" and "roads.eff".

You should actually copy (download) all files found here https://gitlab.com/fg-radi/osm2city/tree/master/fgdata to \data\ :D

Now we are up to something. Perhaps you should have mentioned this when I installed Kempten (which looked great without all this stuff). :)

Everything fine with osm2city now. But I don't have any boats... and I still have the wrong trees, at least compared to Thorsten's and your last screenshots.

To fix this,
download/pull again
copy bermuda.xml to \data\Materials\regions
copy the content of addtomaterials.xml to \data\Materials\regions\materials.xml

Now it's ok, and I think I've learned something about scenery development. Thank you!

Scenery ought to go to a scenery folder, you just have to tell your launcher where that is.

is there an override (eg: like adding a scenery directory) for this data or Materials directory so we don't have to ""corrupt"" our installation by adding or changing official files from the sim installation??
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

As far as I know, there is no override possible (yet)

alright... i'm considering adding this to my fg but i'm confused... do we take both of the above or just one of them? if both, do they have to be applied in a certain order?

later on in the topic, there's a link given to radi's gitlab but that is 404ing...

looking at the first link above, i see what looks to be a typo that's two years old... the typo being the folder name os2ciy (missing the 't' in "city")... maybe that has something to do with the problems others reported?

in studying this, i see
  1. we're to put bermuda.xml in %fgdata%/Materials/regions...
there's already a bermuda.xml file in there... the differences don't seem to be much... change sand area to a town area and add a new section of materials...

  2. we're to copy the contents of addtomaterials.xml to %fgdata%/Materials/regions/materials.xml...
there's already a line in there including the existing bermuda.xml so this should not be needed, right?
so it looks like the only things really needed are the Objects and Terrain directories and their contents... is that correct? and they can be put into their own custom scenery folder, right?
