How to add navaids/fixes?

Questions and discussion about enhancing and populating the FlightGear world.

When XPlane ships a new nav.dat and that someone (c) pushes the change to fgdata. However, we have to be quite careful about keeping the latest scenery and the nav.dat quite in sync, else there can be some very strange things happening (for instance an existing ILS sending you to no runway)...

I've mostly changed only the fix.dat. I've added some VORs, too, but I haven't submitted them anywhere yet. No ILS though.
The fixes should be completely harmless.

I can't do it, so who will it be?
Until then I'll be posting them to a separate thread. Edit: this thread.

I was also wondering about this topic. There are many airports without ILS in FG, but with it in reality. How can I add ILS freq to an airport?

Thanks
Ivan

Hi Guys, I'm playing version 2018.2 in Mac and I'm having problems to find some Waypoints around KSFO, like SUSEY, EBAYE, SYMON etc. Others waypoints like PORTE or AXMUL are find, but others don't.

It's this correct ? Or do I need to update my nav.dat ?

I believe the nav.dat file is pretty old and outdated. I image a new version will be available once we are able to regenerate the world scenery.

Hallo!

I would also like to add some fixes in FG.
It is said here that the blablabla.dat.gz-files have to be unzipped and later zipped again.
But is it possible in Win7 to do this without additional program?
If not what program would you recommend? It should be safe/reliable and free of adware and other sh*t you don't wanna have on your system. It also must not nest deep in the system and should be easily and totally removeable.

As always thx in advance.
Greetings from FIR LOVV.

Hello,

I'm exactly in the same situation. I want to collaborate to to NAV AIDS update but the process seems overly too complex and slow for an update to become available. Also I was surprised that the various *.dat.gz files were not part of the terrasync update. Could this be feasible?

Do you confirm the best way is to unzip, modify locally, zip, test, send the updates to xplane?

Thanks!

This is a rather old thread but just for the record I wanted to share a possibility to enhance the catalogue of available fixes without touching the originally delivered fix.dat.gz of FlightGear. It stems from an idea Alessandro Menti used with his fabulous scenery of LIPX .

FlightGear does willingly accept additional fix data if only it is presented in a defined folder structure.

We need to establish a new scenery folder (i.e. "Fixes") containing a folder “NavData” and therein a folder “fix”. I was missing some waypoints for the northerly approach to Rome (LIRF). So my first .dat file inside the fix folder was ~/FlightGear/Fixes/NavData/fix/lirf.dat containing

Code: Select all
I
1101 Version - Copyright © 2020 D-UKA GPLv2+
42.014920  012.191160 OXERU
42.075050  012.165540 IRBES
42.063430  012.122540 MAVEN
42.094450  012.082680 SUVOK
42.153610  012.202280 EXAMA
99

The new scenery folder “Fixes” needs to be added into the sequence of your established scenery structure (most advanced scenery first):

Code: Select all
--fg-scenery=/home/D-UKA/FlightGear/Scenery-extra/LIPX
--fg-scenery=/home/D-UKA/FlightGear/Scenery-extra/PROJECT3000
--fg-scenery=/home/D-UKA/FlightGear/Fixes
--fg-scenery=/home/D-UKA/FlightGear/Scenery
--fg-scenery=/home/D-UKA/FlightGear/TerraSync

You are not limited to ICAO-codes in filenames nor are you to only one file. italy.dat instead of lirf.dat will do as will canaries.dat or norway.dat living beside it.

After establishing the new scenery folder FlightGear needs to be restarted. If you don’t see it rebuilding the navdata cache something is amiss. Try to delete the navdata.cache and retry.
You want to make sure your additional fixes are incorporated, so add a non-existent test fix to your list like 45.123456 15.123456 DUKAL and try to use it in your flight plan.

Best regards, D-UKA

Sounds great, thanks! I definitely have to test this. And we have to find a way to have a central database to enable FG users to submit it and receive updates, just like Terrasync.
