Hi, I'm attempting to follow the directions on your site to add scenery for my local area. I am curious, is it important that the photoscenery occupy the entire tile? Or could I just do my county for starters, to make sure I have all the kinks worked out? Thanks!

Hi Saltrix,

yes, you need to create an image covering a whole tile. For a test, of course, you can make your county and leave the rest of the region black. If by any chance that county was in the US, just drop me a line with the exact center coordinates and I'll make some tiles for you.

Must admit that I didn't try it yet, but cannot you add transparent parts to your textures? If they are true overlays, the underlying terrain should show up. The texture still needs to cover the entire tile, but the photo would only be visible on non-translucent parts...

Would be nice if it works, because most orthoimagery doesn't include lots of ocean. (and it would also help to make a relatively smooth transition from photo- to normal scenery)

Peter,

Thanks for the quick response! The county does happen to be in the US. And it would be great if it is easy for you to make a tile. (I have learned a lot in starting the process myself though.) I'll send you a pm with the coordinates.

Thanks again.

Gijs,

I have not tried it either, but reading through the DDS specifications, I think you are perfectly right. DDS should support transparency. Apparently the GIMP DDS plugin can be used for that purpose.

Hi sgb110,

as far as I know, the overlay technique that is used by Benoît's patch does not allow to add photo scenery with higher resolution.

The overlay patch certainly allows higher resolutions. You're limited by your hardware though, as well as your photo source (it makes no sense to generate textures with a larger resolution than your source has). I'm using 16384*16384 textures in a project, but not all GPUs will support that. We also had to use the 64 bits version, because 32 ran out of memory after three tiles.

It's as simple as placing a larger resolution DDS file in the terrain directory.

The question is, what technique is sgb110 using?
