From my experience in New York, most of Lower Manhattan, at least, is flat in elevation, even though satellites mistake the terrain as being hilly due to the large number of skyscrapers...
(similar effects can also be found in Tokyo)

Oh yeah, Gijs, I think these maps might be helpful to manually create elevation data, if you want to go that way. 'hope this can be of some use!

Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

I'm also lucky enough to have that experience :)
I could create the scenery without elevation data, but I don't think that'll work for the global scenery...

Yeah... The big apple's a really nice place. Can't beat Hong Kong and San Francisco though, in my opinion.

In that case, please feel free to use the images I posted. (I think copyright infringement won't be a problem if the images themselves aren't published with your elevation data...?)

I'd love to, but I don't have experience with hand-made elevation data and I don't think our scenery-database does...
But this could be a first. Volunteers? I already spent more time than I planned on this :P

If I recall correctly, if you want it pancake flat you can simply build that tile or tiles without including elevation data at all.

Right, except Manhattan isn't flat...
Central Park and Harlem actually has elevation...

Oh yeah, I've just noticed he already built the area without elevation data. Sorry for the useless post.

Just keep going and improving what you can, the rest will get taken care of eventually.

Oh yeah, no doubt about that. Just wondering :)
Anyway, I think it's almost finished. Will send it to Martin this weekend. And maybe we should put up a generated Manhattan, so people can use that to (stimulate them to) place their buildings...

The Chase Manhattan building has been uploaded to scenemodels and should now be available as part of continuing work on New York City. It is part of lower Manhattan.

However I no longer can see shared models - probably a simple problem I haven't fixed. As a result there are two buildings which overlap or nearly overlap, but only one should be removed.

If someone could be so kind to identify which building is associated with the Chase Manhattan building in the .stg file and send it to Martin, so he can remove it from the database, I would greatly appreciate it.

You should be able to find the building's ID via the scenemodels map -> http://scenemodels.flightgear.org/maps/ ... 0FFFFTTFTT (note, does not work in IE)
If you zoom in to a certain level (with the "Scenery Object Details" layer enabled) you'll be able to click an arrow for details.

Gijs:

I can't seem to recreate that functionality using FireFox, the layer isn't displayed after a certain zoom level.

Furthermore, the problem is more a visual one - there are two objects in the vicinity, I have a hunch one is the building which needs to be removed (-74.008889/40.7075).

After a long time, I decided to work on a model for New York: the Metlife (with night and day texture)

Image
Metlife di Cristian Marchi, su Flickr

There is already a Metlife model on the database but I think my version provides a better texture (extracted from one of my photo) and also a night version. I will send it to the fg database but I don't really know how to add it and substitute the existing one. Can I do it with the webform?

PS I've captured some images during the creation of the model and I will try to put up a tutorial on how I did it.
