Measuring distance while placing scenery objects with UFO

Postby FSpilot1824 » Thu May 19, 2022 2:44 am

While using the UFO to place scenery objects in the simulator, is there a way to conveniently measure distance between them other than the cursor? I know the cursor can be used to measure distances up to 10m but I would like to measure distances between objects that are much farther apart. I'm thinking something like a 3D ruler tool.

No, there isn't currently, but it'd be fairly easy to code as an addon - do you know how to do that ? Else I can do it in the evening - it would be a great addition to FG ! :)

I've started on the addon - it's available here:
https://github.com/TheFGFSEagle/FGGeodesy
But all you can do with it so far is print lat, lon, alt to the console. Distance measuring is being worked on - I'll drop a note when it's done ! :)

Done ! :) Don't forget to read the README for installation and usage instructions …
Note though that currently the distance calculation doesn't take altitude into account - working on that.

So, the distance calculation now also takes altitude into account ! :)

I have just added an option to change at runtime whether altitude will be taken into account (3D / topology distance) or not (2D / projected distance).

Thank you! Sorry for the late response, but I will check it out as soon as I get a chance. I'm completely new to FlightGear and I'm using it for some projects I'm working on at my university. To tell you a bit about my background, I'm an aerospace engineering graduate student having just finished my undergrad. I'm learning how to model aircraft flight dynamics in Simulink and I'm using FlightGear to display and manually control the motion of the aircraft. One project aside from that is modifying the existing scenery. I still have a lot to learn about developing content for FlightGear, but thanks for helping me out!
