KEWR-Newark Liberty Airport

Postby flc972 » Wed Sep 15, 2021 3:58 pm

Hi all,

I'm working on KEWR-Newark Liberty airport and have started terminals blockout (here Terminal B https://bitbucket.org/fableb/flcs-kewr_airport/src/master/media/20210915_TermB.PNG).

I would like to work on the groundnet with FlightGear Airport (taxi, pushback) but there are no taxi lines on airport terrain to make taxiways nicer and ease the groundnet creation.
What are the tools, process and the 'best easy' way to add these taxi lines?

Thanks in advance

the easiest way would be to download the latest airport layout with WorldEditor and generate a new scenery tile with TerraGear

@Iomar thank you very much, that’s what I feared...

I used to use 'Airport Web Generator' but it is no longer available.

So all I have to do is to

- Use the Docker image of 'FlightGear TerraGear toolbox' (is it up to date?)
- Or install Terragear on an Ubuntu distribution

and cross my fingers...

Thanks again

If I understand correctly, your main concern is the accurate placement of the groundnet nodes. If that is the case, you could place the nodes "roughly" with FGAirports, then select each node and enter the exact latitude/longitude of each from information you can obtain using another source (Gis maps, Earth Explorer, etc.). That would not get you good taxilines, but the AI Traffic would move where it should.

Note: Google Maps is not to be used due to copyright infringement, according to people on this forum.

@pb321 thank you for this interesting approach.

I will use it to make a 'quick' groundnet for AI traffic and animated jetway locations

Sort of. See Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service, section 2 (d):
2. Prohibited Conduct. Your compliance with this Section 2 is a condition of your license to use Google Maps/Google Earth. When using Google Maps/Google Earth, you may not (or allow those acting on your behalf to):
[...]
b. copy the content (unless you are otherwise permitted to do so by the Using Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View permissions page or applicable intellectual property law, including "fair use");
[...]
d. use Google Maps/Google Earth to create or augment any other mapping-related dataset (including a mapping or navigation dataset, business listings database, mailing list, or telemarketing list) for use in a service that is a substitute for, or a substantially similar service to, Google Maps/Google Earth; [...]

It is more vague than i remember it though. I think it used to be that any reuse for other datasets required prior written consent.

You have an OSM backdrop in FGA and you can always use JOSM to check/trace from Bing.

I'm no sure if latitude and longitude belongs to Google...
May be yes... :-)

@portreekid I've finised the first version of the groundnet with FGA/OSM (many thanks for this tool!). Most of taxiways were well indicated on OSM (not the case for some other airports I worked on).

Is there a process to follow to share it (submission and validation processes...) or the Upload button in FGA is enough?

1. Run validation (Tick Icon on RHS of screen, below save options)

2. Address all error message and re run validation until all cleared

3. Save and Exit (Top Icon RHS panel) will then trigger the option to edit, import, export, upload on the LHS panel

4. Export, to your local scenery and test thoroughly

5. Once happy with the end result, Trigger upload via the 4th icon onth LHS panel

6. Await for the Upload panel to confirm Azure is up and running then use the upload groundnet button, do not trigger the thresholds or tower upload options

7. I ll receive the PR, Review and merge. Any issue of space for improvement I can see, I ll drop you an email directly (ensure your user details are correct in the settings panel)

Cheers

That they do not, however the provider that launch the high resolution photo satellites, operates them and the ground stations, and that color correct, orthorectify (in essence projecting the satellite scenes on a digital elevation model), and georeference the satellite photos (adjust the resulting satellite scenes to known positions on the ground) probably did not give Google an unrestricted license. (Satellite scenes are often prohibitively expensive, like as in if you have to ask you can not afford it.)

@BecOzIcan thank you very much for this detailed checklist. Currently, I'm testing the groundnet and correcting missing parts while creating KEWR scenery
N.B.: Some AI aircrafts sometime block takeoff for a very long time... Strange AI behavior.

I will push it soon
Thanks again

Which version are you on? The current code ignores displaced thresholds and aircraft get stuck. That’s fixed in my most recent PR.

@portreekid FG2020.3.11

Most of the time it works fine, but When this happens the only error message was the impossibility to find a waypoint in another airport, here KALB

238.97 [ALRT]:general Failed to find route from waypoint 000002373D0D1990 to 000002372D221E80 at KALB

That sounds like a bug I fixed in my most recent PR. When an aircraft is repositioned it doesn't reread the parking for the airport. This is not the case of stuck aircraft.
