landmass-effect could be nice but.....

An exciting "new" option in FlightGear, that includes reflections, lightmaps, the particle system etc.. A lot is yet to be discovered/implemented!

landmass-effect could be nice but.....

When using the landmass effect with quality 4 or 5 we get some strange edge.

Is it only me ?

Anyhow the fps from 64 fps ( with vsync ) is decresing to 5 fps.
what can be done to get such feature perfect and usable ?

Cheers

"edges" are wanted- the whole forest plane is lifted up to simulate the forest.

And you need to update your datas- Tim had made some chages top it, so fps are increased now dramatically.

Probably we should have another texture for those edges. One that looks more like a forest and less like a screwed up UV-unwrap.

oops, i fogot to say i am using the very last data cvs, then to me that very low fps is longer there.
GPU 9600GT two graphics card with SLI and prop:sim/rendering/multithreading-mode=AutomaticSelection

should be not the case- Tim is btw. waiting for response, so he can tweak it more and more, so it will work for everyone. You should mention your issues to him.

Anyway, if you don't like the edges, put the quality slider in the rendering options below 4.0

Your answer mean, "these edges are not a bug, it is the normal part of the effect". :(
Yes the quality slider below 4 is, regarding the fps performance, necessary.

I thought, i was doing something wrong.

Why would we want the edges?

I like it better than b4.

Some more tweaking. Maybe green as the top on the sides if possible to blend it a little, if possible. But anyways I like it better now.

Yes, but still the edges don't look good and forests don't cut off in a straight line like that? Are you saying that 3D trees should be in the edges?

Well I would expect someday the entire forest landmass would be replaced with tight clumps of 3D trees.

Hmm, maybe we could apply some distance animation: When you are within a certain distance, you see the 3D trees and if you are far off, you get the geometry shaders with hopefully modified sidewalls ;).

btw tested cvs from monday, now there is the same fps with shader performence levels 3-5, only at 5 the ventilators spin up (on linux with a 260gtx).

I would say that if the "edge" wall is the same color as the top, it would look better. What most definitely would look great is a gradient from the actual color to fade into the roof color, mimic the effect of ground brown to the green leafs :) but just being the same color would work, I think.
