Sun (Set & Rise) below horizon  Topic is solved

An exciting "new" option in FlightGear, that includes reflections, lightmaps, the particle system etc.. A lot is yet to be discovered/implemented!

Sun (Set & Rise) below horizon

Postby Clive2670 » Wed Apr 19, 2017 7:03 pm

Hi all, This question may have been asked before so I apologise in advance if it has! I noticed the other night on my way to LEMG at FL300 that the sun had "set" but still appeared below the real horizon (sea) I was wondering if anyone was aware of this issue? I will say I'm not overly bothered, I just noticed it and was wondering, As it is only a minor thing in the grand scheme of things

A screenshot would be immensely helpful here.

The horizon you see from 30.000 ft is usually not the ground but the upper edge of the lowest haze layer, so if the sun is visible 'a little' below the horizon, that's likely okay, if it's 'a lot' then it's likely a bug (though having written the patch to fix that issue a while ago, I dare say the sun can't be a lot below the horizon...).

I'll do a shot next time I spot the the issue Johan, How is the best way to post such screen shots on the forum please, as I've encountered issues in the past when I have tried to enter "Screen shot of the month" and just gave up!!

Thanks for the info Thorsten, I can see where you are coming from with the haze layer, But as I said to Johan, I will post a good screen shot of this, on what happens to me @ FL300 shortly and you can then say if this is normal or too far below the horizon

This post is probably of help: FAQ: Screenshots.

When choosing an image host it is important that you can hotlink directly to the image file, which is something that can be tricky at some of them. The forum software need the URL to go straight to the image and not a page with the image for image to be shown on the forum.

The screenshot shows the sun *at* the horizon and a bright halo and rays extending below it.

We can now start to argue what the halo structure is supposed to represent, but if you take it to be part of the Airy disc apparently surrounding every bright light source if you view it through imperfect optics (such as the human eye) then the screenshot is fine.

Also, the horizon you see in the screenshot is the haze layer upper edge - the terrain is probably 1.5 km below (dependent on weather conditions). At that view angle, even an atmosphere which seems clear from the ground is pretty opaque.
