Chute movement

An exciting "new" option in FlightGear, that includes reflections, lightmaps, the particle system etc.. A lot is yet to be discovered/implemented!

Your going to get in a lot of trouble if you keep breaking million dollar aircraft to test a couple hundred dollar parachutes. :)

The effect is now also used in the Viggen (not on fgaddon yet). It might be moving too much for a parachute, but I wasn't sure how to fix that.
The chute is from SR-71, and the idea on how to make it move independent of aircraft is from 5H1N0B1.

Nice!

I suspect that for a relatively light load such as the ejected pilot, the chute would be wider and moving a little slower as the forces are expected to be quite a bit less than for trying to slow down a 100 ton Shuttle.

Finding some footage would be interesting... it usually helps.

Might also be possible to simulate this...

if I have a lot of time and energy, I'll try to ;)

Wow, is that supposed to be survivable on land? I guess the winds at the time would have a big impact on that as well as the ground cover or buildings.

It has saved quite a few lives. See this https://cirrusaircraft.com/innovation/a ... arachute/#, and press the "Learn more..." for a video interview. There are more videos around. Google should find them.

There is code around that uses thrusters & nasal in yasim to do chutes. I'm going to look & see if I can apply the effect there as well
