Sunrises (version 1.3 available)

An exciting "new" option in FlightGear, that includes reflections, lightmaps, the particle system etc.. A lot is yet to be discovered/implemented!

I'd be prepared to claim that some of these skies could really pass for real

Without a doubt! Thanks for your continuous efforts on improving our skies. It's nice to see what can be accomplished with persistence, patience and effort. Wishing we had more of such people ;-)

Lots of testing to identify the remaining quirks...

Flying with low cloud cover - predawn takeoff from KNID going north along the Sierra Nevada:

The sun gets out during descent into Fallon...

Image

... on final approach -note the bump map effect on the ground.

Image

Still - looking towards the sun is great, looking away from the sun isn't quite as good, although it's becoming acceptable.

Taking the MiG-29 out over the French Alps at sunset:

Image

Morning trip from Grenoble Le Vesoud to L'Alpe d'Huez and back

Climbing out - Stratocumulus illuminated from below...

Image

... nice forest-covered slopes...

Image

... and a really amazing play of light and shadow just as I turn into my approach...

Image

... back to Grenoble, dawnlight makes way for the day.

Beautiful screen shots, Thorsten.

They have gotten to the point (on the ones not featuring too much of the terrain) that the only signs that they isn't real is the jagged edges on and around the aircraft. :D

Yes, I'd agree that the terrain texturing is usually the only thing giving away the fact that these are not "real" photographs

Some Iceland noon scenes (like here in Finland, the sun is pretty low at the moment):

Scattered clouds:

Overdeveloping Cumulus:

Impressive Stratocumulus layer:

One of the 'perfect' scenes where the clouds just come out right - over Vatnajokull

Low light over the Atlantic ocean:

More cloud banks on the approach to Kevlavik airbase:

On final into Kevlavik:

And two more early morning scenes at yet different weather - scattered Cumulus:

And gloomy overcast weather:

And... works. Looks just great. Files are with Emilian for final tests now, but this will soon appear on GIT.
