Building FlightGear from source, and in the need for help?

strange differences

Postby helijah » Wed Aug 06, 2014 2:52 am

Hi all,

I usually compile FG (OSG, SG, FG) but recently, the version I compiled is extremely slow :(
Image
FPS : 7 (It's the max :( )

So I installed the version available in my packages and here is the result :
Image
FPS : 31 (51 it's the max)

I'm on the same parameters used in both cases. Strange this huge difference.

Regards Emmanuel

P.S. : My PC : INTEL(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.93 Ghz, GeForce G210 (OpenGL 3.3.0) driver 304.123, Ram 2 Go
This is not a powerhouse, but normally it should be enough :)

Of course.

3.2.0 is the version available in the repositories of my distribution

3.3.1 is compiled by me (not the last cause with the last version, simgear crash during compilation)

The comparison is meaningless unless you use the same OSG version, since it is the core of the simulator.

I can confirm the current GIT versions of simgear and flighgear can be built using OSG 3.2.0

Also, if you have manually built OSG, remember passing "-DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release" to cmake, or the library is built using debugging symbols and these seem to slow things down a lot.

I'm using the development version of OSG. AND unfortunately, if the dev of FG should do the same this not the case.

The canvas additions are incompatible with future versions of OSG.

The next Stable OSG (OSG 3.4.0) will not compile SG. So FG.

All this for Canvas!

This is definitively worth adding as an entry on the bug tracker. :(

This problem has existed for a very long time (sonce OSG 3.3.0 minimum, and today the dev version is 3.3.3 )
And if I made the effort to speak English here, I woold not make the effort to use a totaly English interface like bug-tracker"

This information was give here and on IRC long ago ago and it is known. I already have a lot of other things to do than to correct problems that do not affect me directly :)

But thank you for the reply :)

You are welcome :)

And I can easily understand that you do not want to struggle with yet another English web site interface.*

Hopefully the developers already are aware of the upcoming problems. :) (My gut feeling tells me so at least.)

* Side note:
Being from Sweden I am rather good with English, more or less bilingual, but I failed brutally in learning German as a third language in secondary school (I think the other choices where French and Spanish). That I had little or no use of a third language at the time probably contributed to that.

English is the mandatory second language here and English TV shows are captioned rather than dubbed (dubbing is for kids here ;) ). One can also usually find at least a few English magazines and newspapers in some kiosk and that and literature in libraries (in my early teens for example I struggled with English books on aviation).

German texts at the other hand I had none of to read at home at that time (except homework ;) ) and this was in the very early days of the World wide web, when you only would get some 10 to 50 hits with Web Crawler (the first indexing and searching service), in addition few had an Internet connection. I had it at school for example. Today I could for example have browsed the German Wikipedia.

Hi all,

The first faith I have mentioned the problem with OSG Dev, he was told that the stable version of OSG was suficient (an plea in bar somehow).

This time, it appaers that the right people have reacted and made the necessary :) This is a good news.
Like what we must never despair :)

So thank you to them.

I noticed the same thing with a fresh flightgear (next) and the OSG 3.2
Only 3 fps with Rembrandt enabled and 12 with Rembrandt disabled.
I am using an nVidia grafics card too, just like the original poster.
