Trouble with download and compile

Postby dadof4 » Sun Nov 24, 2013 2:20 am

Hello everyone!
I've been trying to install FligthGear 2.12 on my Ubuntu 13.10 desktop. I currently have FligtGear 2.10 installed but the updates in the new version sound too good to pass up!

Machine Specs:
Intel D965WH board with Intel DuoCore 1.8ghz processor
4 Gb 1066mhz DDR3 Ram
Radeon HD 5670 Video card
Onboard sound.

OS: Ubuntu 13.10

I try to do the scripted Download and compile from the Wiki page:
Code: Select all
mkdir ~/fgfs3
cd ~/fgfs3
wget http://www.gitorious.org/fg/fgmeta/raw/19e9e62ba61c40bdbcbacc93d119320d99311e02:download_and_compile.sh
chmod 755 download_and_compile.sh

And this is what I get:
Code: Select all
steve@steve-desktop:~/fgfs3$ wget http://www.gitorious.org/fg/fgmeta/raw/19e9e62ba61c40bdbcbacc93d119320d99311e02:download_and_compile.sh

steve@steve-desktop:~/fgfs3$ chmod 755 download_and_compile.sh
chmod: cannot access ‘download_and_compile.sh’: No such file or directory

So I try to run the file as it's saved and this is the result:
Code: Select all
steve@steve-desktop:~/fgfs3$ chmod 755 19e9e62ba61c40bdbcbacc93d119320d99311e02:download_and_compile.sh
steve@steve-desktop:~/fgfs3$

Nothing!

I have tried installing from the PPA but it tells me I have the lastest version and doesn't do a thing. I currently have three files for FlightGear installs (huge drive) FGFS, FGFS2, and FGFS3 (the one I an trying to install a fresh copy of FlightGear 2.12 in)

Can anyone help?

Hi & welcome
you are new to Linux, right ?
did you notice that the file you downloaded had a different file name, not just "download_and_compile.sh" ?
Use that, and the instructions will work - you can use "ls" to see all files in the directory. Type the first 3 characters and then use the TAB key to auto-complete the filename.

PS: Don't try to mix a new OS with a new piece of software like FG - or you won't understand where the real problem is :D

No I'm not extremely new to Linux but I have been running it for a little over a year.
The file that was downloaded is
Code: Select all
19e9e62ba61c40bdbcbacc93d119320d99311e02:download_and_compile.sh

I did try to execute that file and nothing happened.
Code: Select all
steve@steve-desktop:~/fgfs3$ chmod 755 19e9e62ba61c40bdbcbacc93d119320d99311e02:download_and_compile.sh
steve@steve-desktop:~/fgfs3$

you are new to Linux, the command you posted doesn't execute it at all - it just makes the files executable, which is a different.
You can just run the file by passing it to sh as an argument.

Thanks for the reply that I'm too ignorant to run FlightGear. I won't bother to post and waste your time anymore.

Uh noooo, how about the fact that he gave you an solution?

Personally, I think it would be best to rename the script you downloaded, use this command:
Code: Select all
mv 19e9e62ba61c40bdbcbacc93d119320d99311e02:download_and_compile.sh download_and_compile.sh

Then you can follow the wiki (which suggests `./download_and_compile.sh -s` for the latest stable release, aka 2.12).
Thanks,

you are misunderstanding, like I suggested in my first response: you are obviously not sufficiently familiar with your operating system to follow the instructions, and interpreting this circumstance as an issue inherent to FlightGear itself in general, which is completely unrelated - this is not about "running" FlightGear, it's about building from source first and foremost.
