I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 and an nVidia GeForce GTX 460 graphics card. After reading this, I realized I too was running OpenGL on my cpu. To fix this in Ubuntu I had to install the nVidia driver. I had to open the terminal (Ctrl-Alt-t), then run the following commands

Code: Select all
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Then restart.
Got me up around 45-50 fps with all the rendering settings maxed for quality. I have never seen FlightGear run this fast. It's Awesome!!

thanks for reporting back, but it would obviously be great if you could directly use the wiki and improve the articles there, i.e. by adding your tips there.
