If I 'git clone' do I automatically get the release branch for testing or must I specify somehow ? Tks

You get the branches, but you need to check them out (and probably, create a local branch tracking the remote release branches)

git branch --track release/2.6.0 origin/release/2.6.0


The first name can be anything you like ('banana', 'rel-26', etc) but for sanity it's best to use the same structure as the origin repository.

After creating the local branch use 'git checkout' to switch branches.

Thanks, I've been doing things wrong then. I've been doing just 'clone' and then cmake; I'll go and do some reading. Thanks again.
