In memory of all those who died during 9/11...

These new models are programmed to appear after their "top off" ceremony dates and before their collapse times on 9/11.

Image

During the night they light up the New York skyline, being the only models with night lighting in the NYC area (and the only static models as well, I believe).

Image

For 24 hours after their collapses, the buildings stand as a shining translucent monument; then they disappear.

Image

Models will be submitted to TerraSync and should be available within a few days. No plans to model Freedom Tower (which I think is a way better name than One World Trade Center, curse that naming controversy!) as of yet.

How thoughtful of you to honor the victims of 9/11 in a rather (for the lack of a better word) unusual way.

Wow, this is amazing, very moving  (especially the transclucent phase)

Maybe we should hold some FlightGear gathering in Manhattan during those days
Try flying on the East Coast of the United States more often. There are many improved airports that people scarcely use. You might find me somewhere near JFK (or BWI, IAD, ATL, RIC, BOS...)

Fly safe.

Agreed...
I just hope I won't crash into the building after it disappears...
(Skyop, you DID program it so that the building is literally gone after that 24hr. period, right?)
Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

Despite having over 1700 posts here, I am not even close to being the most skilled guy here... I'm just words and bad drawing, not experience. :P

Of course. ;)

Oh, and the buildings become non-interactive when they are translucent too.

Non-interactive? I thought all the buildings were non-interactive, except for their roofs.

Yeah, pretty much. I just _specifically_ said "don't interact with any aircraft" so that you couldn't land on the roof or anything when the buildings were translucent.

This is a very great way of honoring the victims of 9/11, and a great demonstration of the scenery date/select functions. :)

Unlike the model Gijs described in your Nike missile site thread, the select animation for the WTC is HIGHLY complicated...

I had been on top of the WTC on 8/11 1999, 2 years and 1 month before the terrorist attack.
I still have my entrance card for the observation deck of the WTC, the top of the world.

At that day, when the WTC was destoyed i was shopping in supermarket here in Germany.
In the background of the supermarked you could here music from the radio.
Suddenly the announcer of that radio channel interrupted the program and told us that one of the WTC towers collapsed.

An old man in front of me, who was listening to the radio too, started to babble to me something about the weather. I don't think he had realized what just had happened, but i did.
So i rapidly stopped my shopping tour and hurried back home to turn on the tv.
On TV i saw the second tower collapsing.
I spent the rest of the day watching this incidence on TV.

I was at school and young. We've sent a few relatives to the WTC. I never went up there. It was so close, so we never thought of going to it right away. Next summer, or maybe a storm.... Now I wish we did go. Some things we take for granted. If you want to do something, do it now.

And that's exactly the point. Life's too short to hesitate. It's not only f***ing terrorism, but also illnesses, accidents and so on... So many variables can shorten or end our lives before they are meant to end. I have seen many people suffering - not only due to 9/11. It can be so easy: Carpe diem - live each day! Life's too short and to valuable to spend it with grief. Try this: walk on the street and say to someone unknown "Hello". Hug the ones you love as often as you can. Say "Thank you" when you are thankful - don't wait for the "right moment"...
Strength and hope to everyone who has lost someone or something he/she really loved!

I agree. Why don't we host an MP event on the anniversary?
