Changes for the scenery database frontend

Postby Torsten » Wed Dec 23, 2020 3:11 pm

I have just moved the scenemodels database web frontend at https://scenery.flightgear.org/ to AWS Lambda backed by CloudFront CDN.

Our frontend has very little access rates which makes it a perfect candidate for running in a "function as a service" environment with the option to scale down to zero. This means, there will be no computing instance running where there is no traffic. No CPU cycles are wasted while waiting for traffic means: no power consumed, no CO2 emitted and best of all: no costs for idle machines on my monthly bill.

There /might/ be a little warmup time when loading the address into your browser. This happens, when AWS has removed all computing instances due to inactivity and now has to reload the containers first. Every subsequent call should be answered as fast as it can get. Warmup should no longer take than just a few seconds, usually they not even noticeable.

Those of you who add objects or models to the database, please let me know if something is broken.

Stay safe, everybody!

Hi,

the map is now at https://scenery.flightgear.org/static/map/index.html

Some recently added models (e.g. https://scenery.flightgear.org/app.php? ... id=3500666 from the 19th; another one added on the 21st) are not yet available via Terrasync.
Maybe they just take a few more days to appear.

on the TS-Status link, the totals and history boxes on the right just display loading spinners forever... they do not load anything...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

i've now submitted a new static model for the 2nd time. usually i'd receive an email saying 'your contribution has been sent for approval'. so far i haven't gotten this mail.
my other model updates (see previous post) are also still not available in terrasync. it'd be nice if someone could check it.
other peoples model updates do appear under 'Recently updated models' though.

EDIT: for the 2nd attempt i did receive the confirmation e-mail. but it was flagged as spam by Google (which never happened before even once).

someone from the IP
address 127.0.0.1 (localhost), which is thought to be you, issued a 3D model import request.

But the IP address is clearly not mine (well, in a way it is).

EDIT 2: for some reason fg's scenery download option didn't fetch some scenery updates. after manually deleting the offending folder in Terrasync/Objects/... it finally worked.

On the map https://scenery.flightgear.org/static/map/index.html i see only OSM and the grid.
But i dont see marker for the models. Maybe the map doesnt have full functions yet because of the new server?

i seem to see them just fine... have to be zoomed in to a certain point before the appear... assuming you're talking about the red and blue circles with the arrows pointing out of them...

If I zoom in much enough to see taxiways and buildings I see the markers and with direction arrows.

Works here, and both upper, lower, and mixed case works for me.

roll your mouse wheel and zoom in a little more...

eg:
  • i load https://scenery.flightgear.org/static/map/index.html.
  • i see a map of almost the whole world.
  • i select a place (UK in this instance) and hover my mouse over it.
  • i double click once and see London appear.
  • i double click on London 6 more times and see the airport icons appear.
  • i double click 3 more times and now i can see the circles with the arrows.
i use double clicks in this example because it is easier to count them than the number of indents i feel go by when i roll my mouse wheel...

i tried typing "ksfo" and "KBOS" without the quotes in the search box and both resulted in moving the map to the chosen airport at a more zoomed in level than i was at when i was at london in my example above...

No, nothing.
Maybe this site need a conection to another site that i cant access.
Since 2 month i have problems with some sites. I also cant access duckduckgo.com.
I dont know what the problem is.

UPDATE:
problem found! My internet connection need a mtu of 1452 because of encapsulation (PPPoE).
Its curios that most connections are worked without this setting.
Anyway, i can use duckduckgo.com again, see all pictures in SOTM and also see the circles on the map again :)
