AUCAFLY hangar and logo for the FlightGear wiki

Postby bugman » Fri Jun 10, 2016 4:13 pm

Hi Ross,

I have uploaded your banner to the wiki. I thought of using it on the GTA IV Tampa wiki article for testing, but unfortunately it looks like you've given up on your nice collection of vehicles. Have you thought of maybe using a service such as SourceForge to provide a webpage for your hangar and a file download area for your creations?

Edward

Also the way I look at my hangar, I think I will make one page covering all of my aircrafts instead of having multiple wiki pages. The reasons are 1. they are all fictional aircrafts (cars with wings) and 2. they have the same set up (same fdm, same library, same wings and wheels). So I think on my wiki page, it will just be something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_Cars

Oh, the reason I suggested that is because not everyone can access Google drive downloads, and SourceForge or other open source infrastructure file downloads tend to have very long lifetimes.

Fair enough. It is just the sound library that is on Google Drive. I will push it to github within a couple of days :)

Thanks

Hey Ed,

Can you please use this (http://wiki.flightgear.org/AUCAFLY) for testing?

Thanks so much with your help,

The way the FlightGear wiki is set up is to have one page per aircraft/seacraft/spacecraft/vehicle. See the wiki page Category:Controllable craft and follow that down, and you'll see one page for each. The aircraft infobox template, wiki categories, and other wiki infrastructure is set up for this design. Apart from the special case of the FGAddon hangar, we do not have a page for each hangar (note that this FGAddon article describes the official infrastructure, its history, and how to work with it). That is instead reserved for the webpage of the hangar itself.

The reasons are 1. they are all fictional aircrafts (cars with wings) and 2. they have the same set up (same fdm, same library, same wings and wheels). So I think on my wiki page, it will just be something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_Cars

I have now updated my testing template for preliminary AUCAFLY hangar support. You can now test it out (e.g. http://wiki.flightgear.org/AUCAFLY).

Thanks bugman. I am well aware that the wiki has one page per aircraft. However, given all my planned aircrafts are very similar to one another (just different car bodies if you get what I am saying), I think it is much better for the community if I just group everything in one page. Like if I make plane A with a BMW body and another month make a variant of plane A with an additional spoiler, or a 3 series plane in this month and a 5 series in two months time, it would be like spamming the wiki with pages after pages of my fictional aircrafts. I don't personally want to see that happen. Hence, I think it is better off with one page. Think of it as a module (MQB or whatever VW calls it these days).

You already have a dedicated single page for grouping together all your machines ;)

This is a subcategory of Category:Aircraft by hangar, matching the others. Anyway, there are thousands of pages on the wiki, and as the new aircraft infobox template will automatically group and categorise your creations, there will be no issue. You should also label you creations in the new infobox with:

Code: Select all
| type = Fictional aircraft

Or append "/Fictional aircraft" to the 'type' list, so that each page appears in Category:Fictional aircraft.

Regards,
Edward

Edit: For variants of the same craft, these should be grouped together so you have multiple *-set.xml files in the aircraft base directory. You then list these in the "fgname" parameter, separated by "/". See de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter for a great example with 3 variants.

Thanks Ed for everything!!

I see. But what about http://wiki.flightgear.org/Category:Civil_aircraft or other categories that I use?

No problems! For multiple categories, the new template supports:

Code: Select all
| type = Civil aircraft/Fictional aircraft/Sport aircraft/etc.

Sorry for not making it clear. I was trying to say if I make a page for each individual fictional aircraft, the civil aircraft category may end up too many "junks" haha :P

Anyway I have finished my page for now until my next project. See if you like it or you still think I need to make one page per aircraft.
