Using flight gear materials on x-plane

Postby tggm » Tue Sep 29, 2015 11:28 pm

We're starting development of an opensource (GNU GPL v2) A320 aircraft plugin for x-plane, mainly for fun, learning avionics, systems and some C++ :)

Our motivation began with our belief that the current offer of Airbus airliners on x-plane generaly lacks in quality and features. We believe much more in creating opensource models that might be improved and worked on by many different people instead of an obscure developer that might (and this has happened on X-Plane) abandon the project.

Altough coding is fun, making 3D models is much much harder. So we searched for existing models of the A320 and found this one:

http://wiki.flightgear.org/Airbus_A320_Family

We really would love to have a simple model aircraft to put some buttons and displays and develop systems for it.

So, the question is, being our x-plane plugin GPL, can we use flightgear's models ?

Thank you

You may also like to consider the GPL (to the best of my knowledge -- confirm?) A320neo found at www.github.com/artix75/A320neo.
Sounds good!

Yes, you can use any of the official FG 3d models for another GPL project without obtaining anyone's permission - they're (mostly) GPL 2.0+ or compatible licensed (some are GPL 3.0+ currently, we're working to make this consistent). For models from 3rd party hangars, you have to check the licensing individually - some people prefer to make 3d work (or the whole plane) available under a different license which you can not easily re-use in a GPL project.

Hope this helps!
