Wishlist: link to download all aircrafts in one archive

Postby Talkless » Sat Aug 16, 2014 10:15 am

Hi,

It's a little annoying when playing in multiplayer you see dummy aircraft models, for models you do not have installed. So, I've had to use some home made script to download and extract all aircrafts from FTP.

I thought, maybe it would be useful if website would contain BitTorrent link (or FTP-uploaded one single big archive) to download all aircraft models in one go, just like with Scenery?

if you really want to, you can edit AircraftCenter.nas to add a checkbox for fetching (and even installing) all aircraft automatically - even though that will obviously take a lot of time. It's just a foreach loop that will download/install each aircraft.

Personally, I am not sure if this is such a great idea though ...

You could also download the latest fgdata (I highly recommend using git to download it instead of hitting the Download button on the webpage - that way updates will be definitely faster) and get the latest aircraft models from there.

It's not a definitive solutions (some players use aircraft from custom hangars), but it's a start.

custom hangars will be supported the AircraftCenter - according to discussions on the devel list, that was one of the main motivators involved in developing this feature

Thanks for replays,

I didn't knew about that Aircraft Center. It's written that "this feature is scheduled for FlightGear 4.x.", is that true? :?

I guess GIT suggestion should work OK until then.

yeah, git will be a good solution - besides, the AC is considered experimental, but will be available in 3.2

Yes I've used wget also, I just thought that having a single archive, optionally downloadable through BitTorrent, would be more convenient, less tech-savy and possibly less resource hungry, at least compared to git clone...

Now I see more and more fguk aircrafts in multiplayer, and what about them? Do they have Git repo, or FTP with all of them?

Not that I know of. (Actually, it makes sense to create a standard for packaging custom scenery/aircraft/objects and the like, I think it was discussed on the core mailing list. Unfortunately I'm involved in other areas of the project right now, so I won't be able to implement it at this time, but I'm definitely interested in contributing to this.)

the general idea is for such people to have their own hangar and integrate that with the aircraft center

Standard packaging... Aircraft Center with custom hangars... these are long term solutions for (far far?) future. Monthly updated torrent, or similar, would be more realistic.

You can check out the aircraft center dialog in $FG_ROOT/Nasal/canvas/gui/dialogs to see for yourself that supporting additional hangars shouldn't be very difficult - the package manager should only need very minor modifications - and now that 3.2 is out, patches are certainly appreciated. The idea itself doesn't need much else - a number of core developers have been wanting to implement this for years, and the really difficult work has already been completed by TheTom and Zakalawe.
