It is a good question. While svg files would require a plugin to the Wikimedia wiki software on the server, there is many advantages to svg files in several cases.

I have made rulers and protractors that can be used for flight planning, as well as tools I regularly use to scale maps properly. Those, as well as for example map overlays and instrument panel layouts are best shared as svg files.

also, vector images can be more easily stored, updated and maintained in the long run. Philosopher's SVG image that I uploaded on his behalf would be difficult to extend later on after conversion to a raster image.
