2.4.0 Not in Linux Repos?

Postby shashikasaragodu » Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:01 pm

Came across wonderful screen shots of the new version. I failed to get any linux package as of today. How long will it take to appear in linux repos, will it be available in ubuntu 11.10?

You should ask Ubuntu that. The source archive for FlightGear 2.4.0 should be available from http://www.flightgear.org, however.

It may take a while.

Debian (upon which Ubuntu is based) tends to be very conservative about upgrades, and it can take years sometimes.

Playdeb has it for Natty (11.04)
http://www.playdeb.net/updates/Ubuntu/11.04/
from:
http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/packages/show/365367

Looks like it's nowhere near even ready for the official Debian folks yet.
http://packages.debian.org/sid/fgfs-base

This is the latest available official (for Oneric) is here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hu/oneiric/fgfs-base

Here's someone who's compiled a version for Lucid, but I have not tried it yet:
http://www.andrewferrier.com/blog/2011/ ... ntu-10-04/

I am sure in a few days there will be a compiled package available.

The ubuntu package is always late with several packages.
But no problem !

I seriously advice this. works perfect for me. ( Ubuntu 11:04 )

The download_and_compile.sh script from Brisa.

It comes with a bunch of tools you would else load seperatly. But after compiling you have a complete system at once.
I like it. works fine.

Read more about it here http://wiki.flightgear.org/Scripted_Compilation_on_Linux_Debian/Ubuntu

As it says inside it, that script takes over 3 hours to run so be prepared. :)

A large amount of that time is spent to download the scenery and data files anyway so this is not much different from fetching it from a Linux repository.
Compiling OSG, SimGear and FGFS for me takes about 1 an hour or less.

Of course if you have a slower processor and good broadband, the above may be reversed - Building all those CXX objects alone takes more than 90 minutes here...

The total time of build on my system, pentium 4 3Ghz, took around 3 hours. But then you have it all at once, except for the scenery.
And best of all, it works, no crash ... If you wait for Ubuntu to distribute the last version, you have to wait much longer.

I think it depends on the distro. I run Gentoo there were ebuilds in bugzilla the day after the release and with in a few days there were ebuilds in the gamerlay overlay. I am expecting that there will be ebuilds in portage with in a week or so.

Indeed, depending on the distro, in this case Ubuntu.
A bit off-topic, I am glad I have a release of 2.49 Blender in that distro. The new version does not export to AC3D which is needed for flightgear !
So I design in 2.59 and export via 2.49. ( I hope it ever becomes fixed, or don't lose 2.49 )

Thank you all, finally tried playdeb package in ubuntu 11.04 on Dell inspiron laptop. There was an issue, problem with colour- blue and green were high in all the planes and on runway too. In b 747 there was a white shield flickering over the windshield. But both the issues were solved when disabled material shader but lost those extra effects. But enjoyed the latest version. Little off topic, b747-400 left washer stopped working after some time. Thanks all.
