Helicopter immediately crashes at start-up  Topic is solved

Helicopter flying is completely different from flying a fixed-wing aircraft and thus requires different skills.

Helicopter immediately crashes at start-up

Postby sven » Sat Nov 26, 2011 9:28 pm

I can't get the eurocopter bo105 (or any other helicopter) to start in flightgear 2.4.0. The '}' key doesn't work.

I start flightgear from the command line: win32\fgfs --aircraft=bo105

In fact I have the impression that the helicopter is already in a 'crashed' state when flightgear starts. At start-up I hear the sound of the engine stopping and immediately afterwards a big bang. When I get it to start at a specific altitude, I have the same behaviour - it only takes longer to crash.

The only thing that does something is the 's' key.

I do not have the same behaviour with the airplanes.

Ideas?

Thanks
Sven

What FG version are you using?
Try with the autostart button in the menu.
The engine is the heart of an aeroplane, but the pilot is its soul.

Right, that was a bug :)

I downloaded the zip file and yes, the '}' now works on the Sikorsky. Thanks a lot.

Now, I have to try to learn how to have it take-off. If I read the wiki correctly this will not be easy.

Glad you managed to start it! Learning how to fly the heli is a lot harder though :)
All I can say is practice, practice and practice. And ocassionally google for some (non-FlightGear) heli tutorials/tips and try to... practice them in FlightGear.

This will also happen if you haven't installed the correct scenery tarball for the are you are flying in. When you start the sim the aircraft will seem to crash and the blades on the helicopter will look broken

I am having a similar problem , but mine differs in all the Heli's spin left then crash no matter what i do. could it be the trim settings from the planes ? The super Stallion is the worst. the engine starts i apply very little throttle it spins and crashes regardless on my input. i am using FG 2020.1.1 and Logitech 3d Extreme Pro Flightstick , Win7 i5 process, gtx875 card 16 gb mem. 60" screen. I have tried every Heli , with the same result. I understand it will be difficult to learn to fly these , but I don't even get a chance to try anything before it spins and flips tom te left.

The fact they all spin left is a bit odd. They should spin left with clockwise rotating blades, right with anticlockwise spinning blades.
The trottle in helis is reversed, so what you would have as full throttle in a fixed wing would actually be minimum collective in a heli, which is the position you want to start it in. Do you use pedals ?
