What version of 737 are You using ? Probably best developed is 737-800YV with reasonable good flight dynamics model from https://github.com/FGMEMBERS/737-800YV, but still very incomplet. Autopilot works very similar as on 777 :
- create route in Route manager
- take off
- climb to 500 feets
- use CMD A button on right portion of FMC panel, then LNAV, select desired altitude and LVL CHG
- VNAV is not implemented, descent calculations are on You, use standard rule 1:3 - on 10000 feets of descent You need 30 nm when ground speed is 230-250 kts

... or use another (payware) sim with better 737

You should set LNAV and LVL CH before engaing CMD.... Generally it's advisable to not have CMD on with no modes selected (as you don't know what the plane will do once they are)

LNAV can be armed off ground too, as can TO/GA modes which will change to LNAV and LVL CH automatically.

On 737-800YV You can't arm LNAV or LVLCHG on the ground before engaging CMD-A or CMD-B. Tested minute ago.

EDIT :
777 - You can arm LNAV, but FLCH is disabled on the ground.

you CAN arm LNAV on the ground. I just did it. You need a valid route.

LVL CH, no, but I didn't say you could. (did you read it???????????????????) What i said was, you can put TO/GA modes, which will go automatically to LVL CH at the acceleration altitude.

Strange, for me with 737-800YV downloaded from fgmembers it doesn't work. My procedures :
- AutoStart
- create route
- activate route
- on ND I can see route
- FLAPS 5
- set ALT to 5000
- LNAV is not usable
- TOGA button, full power, take off, but LVL CHG inactive
- at 500 feets AGL CMD-A, then manual LVL CHG, then LNAV - all works good

Don't use FGMEMBERS, use
http://github.com/YV3399/737-800YV.gjt

This afternoon I'll confirm it works again.
LVL CH will around 1500ft agl.

I downloaded plane from http://github.com/YV3399/737-800YV.gjt and found that LNAV arm is not indicated with green light on the ground, but probably is armed, because after take off the green light lite on without AP engage.
