GNU/GPL MiG-21 development

Postby pjedvaj » Fri Mar 19, 2010 10:13 am

I know there are probably some existing models of MiG-21 for FG, but not under GNU/GPL license, and thus not in the official game! I'm completly new in this type of modeling/programing but I'll give my best. Any sugestions/help are welcome:)

I could only find this one:
http://games.softpedia.com/get/Mods-Addons/FlightGear-Addon-Mikoyan-Gurevich-MiG-21.shtml

The basic model is finished, I'm working on textures. We'll see how is going to fly...

Thnx. If I get stuck I'll ask you. :)
I want to use multiple textures, for now only original USSR and Croatian AF.

Adding some detail, like Tumansky R-25, landing gear... Later I'll work on a 3D cockpit.

Model is now repainted in SketchUp, textured version was too large (7MB), now is about 2.6MB! Unfortunately, application crashed when I was modeling 3D cockpit, so I'm doing it all over again. :( Trickiest part is yet to come, but after examining some XML configuration files from other models I think there won't be any problems. :)

Looks like a nice addition to FligthGear!

Am I right that you painted it using plain colors? If so, that is not preferably, as it will be hard (let's say impossible) to switch liveries. Creating a new model for every livery will result in a lot larger filesize than 7 MB. A better solution would be to resize the texture ;)

Cheers,

Ya a livery selector would be better than having a different model for each livery. That includes mapping the one and only model.

I'm working on animations in AC3D with some X-Plane plugin, but don't worry, it will be FG exclusive.

The people here would be very dissapointed if this standard animations woulden't be there (and the aircraft would not be even count as alpha....)

You might wish to consult David Culp's MiG-21 for some pointers on how to make it all work, his Fishbed is rather nice. On his site he has a Romanian Air Force model as well as a Chengdu F-7MG (A Chinese license copy of the Fishbed). Both are excellent planes and should be tested for some idea of how the plane should come out feeling like :)

Bad news, MiG-21 project is on ice :(
Sorry, but I don't have any previous experience, and at this moment I have too many other projects simultaneously...

3D model with no livery is available as free download in SketchUp format at 3D Warehouse, and you're welcome to use it:
