The P-51D in GIT now has speed sensitive braking and the max braking force at lower speeds is reduced. I don't know if this will be enough to use only a keyboard or not.

Another solution to having a "trigger" on the keyboard is to make it a default keyboard mapping for your FG system. Then it will work on all aircraft and you don't have to wait for the aircraft devs to "fix" things.

The fix for "e" as trigger is now in fgdata git, along with a bit of cleanup of the models.

Just pushed a major update to the git repo, will reach fgdata soon. The highlight of this update is the conversion to the new combined shader, featuring dynamic dirt/grit depending on engine wear. You'll need an up to date fgdata for this.
