a basic understanding of aerodynamics, FOR SURE, :-)
By the way, isn't it the case for any jsbsim user ?

Yes you have to understand what the terminology means and what the various functions are doing. Otherwise you can't effectively tune your model. But to use a tool like XFOIL or xflr5/6 to create table data for various JSBSIm functions takes it up to a new level and you definitely need to have a better understanding of aerodynamics.

I didn't read the whole thread, but it looked like a good place to add this link. Perhaps someone has mentioned it already, but Buckaroo has been busy providing knowledge to those that seek it. Nice job Buck.

So, I have a few questions.

I recently heard about how to create airplanes for Flightgear, and I wanted to make one. I would be using Blender to create the model.

Question 1: For the YASim and JSBSim, I kind of want to know what in the world those do and if I have to make my model true to physics?

Question 2: If you create an animation in Blender for say, the rudder, how would that work? I know some things about animating, but I don't get how Flightgear gets the animation. :|

So, if you can help me with this that would be very nice! :D

Iguana.
I fly for fun.

This thread was not meant to show each step how to make an aircraft. But the most important things before you begin to regard !

For specific steps lile animation etc. please use the search function of this forum, theFGwiki and of course the documentation available with each copy of FlightGear which can be find in data/Docs

The results start to get iffy at and beyond the stall point but my experience using these tools is that the polars beyond stall are plausible which is about all you can expect without access to a wind tunnel. It takes a lot of work to generate a full set of polars and you need to have at least a basic understanding of aerodynamics.

My last 3 JSBSim FDMs Gloster-Meteor-jsb, A6M2-jsbsim and JetStar-II, have all changed from using Lift, Drag and Side to using Normal, Axial and Side. A brief discussion of the difference is on the this wiki page

My basic workflow is:
1. Generate one or more aeromatic FDMs for my aircraft. I will choose different 'types' of aircraft with an eye towards blending two or more results.
2. Move through the aeromatic FDM adjusting CG, gear contacts, propulsion locations, fuel tank locations.
3. Generate a simple datcom model (no control surfaces) and extract the cNormal, cAxial and cPitch tables from the .out file.
4. Do some 360 degree and ground effects magic.
5. Test and tweak.

It was a great idea to revive this thread!!!

I've started work on my first model and I want to gather the most information to get it right. My first priorities are to get it to look good and to fly right, the other things will come afterwards.

This discussion and all the links in it are a goldmine for me. :D

Looks like I'm going blind as well as deaf

All I have for that is a large scale 3 view that I've scanned, 6 A4 sized pages that will need merging together into 2 sets of 3 pages.

No worries, I already have the 3 views from this website:

And I've started working on the model in Blender.

I was hoping to have more done so far, but all kinds of things get in the way sometimes 8)

EDIT:

I just got the ok from Syd Adams to use anything off the Twotter that can help me

Hi Brett,

I just got them. The blueprint I'm using is fine for the general shape but the plans you sent me will be most excellent for the control surfaces and the panels.

Thank you very much :D

You're welcome :)

I also have set of the same for the Caribou if you ever need them.

Yes I'll take them, I'm also working on the RCAF livery for the Caribou here and there, so I might as well do it right and go for full panel detail. 8)
