McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Development

Postby Octal450 » Thu Feb 18, 2021 11:59 pm

Hello,
This is one of those times where I reveal to you something that has existed for a while but nobody knew about

My first project in FGFS was the MD-80 series, and this is what got me into development of aircrafts. However due to various reasons such as nonGPL (never FGaddon-able), no idea how to 3D model, etc, the project was quickly dropped in favor of the A320 and MD-11 projects. But I still love that quirky little bird.

So before I say more, a quick backstory. During my "absence" from FlightGear Oct 2019-April 2020, I was tinkering around with the idea of MD-80 aerodynamics in JSBsim. Why? Because I was bored and I didn't have nothing to do at some times. So I said, why not begin to check out some stuff.

See, the MD-11 has been my main project and it (and A320) are extremely complex computer controlled aircraft. Every single thing pretty much is tied into advanced and extremely complex computer systems. So I needed some diversion and thus the MD-80's FDM came from there. The MD-80 while it has some complexities, is a much simpler and more basic aircraft, therefore I thought of it as an ideal side-project.

Shortly after my return in April, and getting re-acquainted with things, I contacted Gary aka buckaroo, the author of the original MD-81 for FlightGear and asked his permission to re-release his MD-81 visuals as GPL. I am very thankful to him, as he did do so!

So, I downloaded a new copy of the MD-81 and began the rework process.

Please note that this is intended as my one and only side-project aircraft. The MD-11 is my main project.

Little short list of things that have been done, during my various MD-11 breaks.
- Aerodynamically operated flight controls. You control the tabs, my simulation decides what the surface does! (Elevator Downward and Rudder power also simulated)
- Hydraulic System
- Fuel System
- Engine simulation JT8D-217A with my custom JSBsim FGTurbine fixes so it acts right.
- Accurate simulation of EPR and power settings
- Custom Canvas PFD
- Almost every instrument has been reworked
- Fully modelled autoflight panel and realistic operating DFGS: Autopilot, Autothrottle, and Yaw Damper (somehow I managed to 3D model that full panel!)
- Flight dynamics reviewed by retired actual MD-80 captain - there is still work to do but its pretty good from what he tells me
- legoboyvdlp has graciously helped with 3D modelling some stuff, big thanks to him!

I am modelling the MD-82 with JT8D-217A engines, with the original Analogue or Retrofitted cockpit. It will not contain the full FMS/VNAV system, but most likely will contain the CMA900 and PMS system at some point. This is intended to model the older expirience as seen on many of the American Airlines craft, rather than the computerized new one. Perhaps I will add the full FMS/VNAV variant far into the future, but not now.

Image

Please note that without assistance, the visual quality of the cockpit will only be so good. I am not the 3D guy, but I trying to learn a little, and some results are seen in the VC. It won't look as beautiful as the MD-11, but everything will be accounted for an functional. Maybe some-day either I will be good enough with 3D to overall it beautifully, or someone else will see the realism and contribute a better VC!

You could've at least made an effort with the screenshot and used the best livery, the McD's one {insert laughing emoji here}

"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Looks awesome! Any idea on an initial release date, or is it too early to tell?

Great, Josh!
I hope, you really ENJOY coding to bring the mad dog to life!

Sounds very interesting about the trim tabs and other items. So just have fun doing it!

Why do you so emphasize ENJOY? I always love programming the planes. Its the entire reason this thing exists, even on my "break" I couldn't keep away from it.... LOL

The X-Plane 11 MD-80 has a horrible FDM so considering from that end will not be considered.

Another peak:

Both PFD styles are available. You can select whatever your carrier has if you wish. The default is Single Cue as the American fleet this is modelled after uses it.
